What Makes a Good Doctor?
MMIEasyAnswer the question
What Makes a Good Doctor?
What do you think makes a good doctor?
Which of those qualities do you most need to develop?
Have you observed a doctor who exemplified one of those qualities?
Can a good doctor be a poor communicator?
Speak it out loud and we'll type it for you (free), or type your own notes — then mark yourself below.
- Structure: why medicine → concrete evidence → honest reflection.
- Be specific about what medicine uniquely offers — avoid "I want to help people".
What strong answers doReveal the benchmark
Hidden so they don't bias your answer. Score yourself first, then reveal them to compare.
- Aim for 4-5 qualities at most - depth over breadth. Clinical skill, empathy, communication, integrity, and resilience cover the core.
- Anchor each quality to an example you've observed in shadowing or work experience.
- Conclude with which quality you yourself are working on - shows self-awareness.
A worked example: how a strong answer is built
A structure to adapt, not a script to memorise — examiners spot recited answers instantly.
Choose four qualities and defend them rather than listing ten. A defensible set is clinical competence, communication, integrity and resilience — competence because everything else is worthless without it, communication because a correct diagnosis that is not understood does not change behaviour, integrity because most of medicine is unobserved, and resilience because the job continues after a bad outcome.
Attach each quality to something concrete you saw. Integrity, for example, is easiest to evidence not through a dramatic event but through a small one: a clinician correcting their own record, or explaining a delay honestly rather than deflecting it.
Finish with the quality you are still building and what you are doing about it. Naming a genuine gap — usually resilience or the ability to sit with uncertainty — reads as self-awareness. Claiming you already have all four reads as a script.
Framework: Four qualities, each evidenced, then one you are working on
