Structured Interviews
New Zealand's structured interviews are live, conversational and assessor-led. Otago BDS and Otago MBChB Alternative Category both use a structured Zoom interview — prepare for it with depth, reflection and genuine NZ-healthcare awareness.

The format
What are structured Zoom interviews?
Understanding the live, panel-style format New Zealand uses instead of in-person panels.
New Zealand does not run traditional in-person panel interviews. Instead, Otago uses a structured Zoom interview — a single, longer, conversational session with a small panel of 2 to 3 assessors, conducted live over video.
Candidates are assessed on their motivation, ethical reasoning, reflection on experience and understanding of the New Zealand healthcare context. Like a panel interview, the structured format allows follow-up questions and deeper exploration of your reasoning — quite unlike Auckland's asynchronous MMI.
Conversational, live
Build rapport with a live Otago panel through in-depth discussion that explores your motivations and reasoning over roughly 40 minutes on Zoom.
Why it matters
How structured Zoom interviews differ
The structured format rewards depth over breadth — a different preparation strategy from the MMI.
Depth over breadth
Fewer questions but more discussion, critical thinking and self-reflection on each — unlike the rapid-fire station format of an MMI.
Follow-up questioning
Live assessors probe further and ask you to justify and develop your answers in real time — prepare for follow-up, not set-piece responses.
Rapport via Zoom
Building rapport through a screen takes deliberate eye contact (look at the camera, not the thumbnail), a neutral background and a steady pace.
What Otago assessors look for
Otago panels value coherence — your answers should build on each other across the ~40 minutes, showing consistent values and growing self-insight. Strong candidates pause briefly before answering, link new points back to experiences they have already mentioned, and engage every assessor on the call rather than only the lead questioner. Authenticity and genuine reflection consistently outperform polished, rehearsed answers.
Where
Which NZ schools use structured interviews?
Two Otago pathways use the structured Zoom interview. Otago MBChB general entry and Auckland MBChB do not.
Otago BDS
All shortlisted Otago BDS applicants receive an invitation to a structured Zoom interview — approximately 350 invitations per year. It assesses motivation, communication and suitability for a health profession.
- UCAT-ANZ: not required — removed from the 2025 intake onwards
- Entry route: HSFY at Otago, or direct entry (school leavers / graduates)
- Otago BDS is the only dental degree in New Zealand
Otago MBChB Alternative / MAPAS pathways
The Alternative Category interview is a 40-minute structured Zoom interview for applicants presenting special circumstances (mature-age, disability or exceptional situations) who do not qualify via HSFY or Graduate pathways. A panel of 2–3 assessors conducts it live.
- Duration: approximately 40 minutes
- UCAT-ANZ: not required for Alternative Category
- Note: standard Otago MBChB HSFY and Graduate entry do not require an interview — selection is by academic ranking
Compare
Otago structured interview vs Auckland MMI
Two very different NZ formats — knowing which you face shapes how you prepare.
| Aspect | Otago (BDS / Alt. Category) | Auckland MBChB |
|---|---|---|
| Format | Single structured Zoom session (~40 minutes) | Asynchronous video MMI — 8 stations via Kira Talent |
| Interviewers | Panel of 2–3 assessors (live via Zoom) | No live interviewer — recorded and reviewed asynchronously |
| Depth | Allows follow-up questions and deeper exploration | Tests a breadth of themes across shorter timed stations |
| UCAT-ANZ role | Pass/fail gate (MBChB only); not required for BDS | Weighted ~15% of selection score (2027 entry) |
Question themes
What the Otago panel will explore
Structured interviews range widely but predictably. Here is what each theme tests — and how strong candidates approach it.
Motivation for medicine / dentistry
Tests genuine, realistic motivation. Balance passion with pragmatism and evidence every claim with a specific experience — never status or salary.
Reflection on experience
Assessors care what you LEARNED, not what you saw. Pick specific moments and reflect on the qualities they revealed about you.
Ethical reasoning
There is rarely a right answer. Work through the principles, argue both sides, and name the tension where values conflict.
NZ healthcare awareness
Show you understand Te Whatu Ora — Health New Zealand, the pressures it faces, and why issues matter — with balanced, realistic responses.
Te Tiriti & Hauora Māori
Expect questions on Te Tiriti o Waitangi obligations, cultural safety and Māori health equity. Speak with humility and genuine awareness, not slogans.
Resilience & self-insight
Have real setbacks ready. Be honest about a failure and end on what you changed — learning from feedback is viewed positively.
Practice
