Free New Zealand Interview Preparation Resources

Sample questions, a Te Tiriti o Waitangi question bank, MAPAS reflection prompts, MCNZ ethics summaries, and a NZ healthcare glossary — purpose-built for Auckland and Otago applicants.

Why NZ-specific resources matter

  • Auckland MBChB uses an asynchronous Kira Talent MMI with a mandatory Te Tiriti o Waitangi station — not covered in UK guides
  • Otago BDS and MBChB Alternative Category use structured Zoom interviews assessed against MCNZ professional values, not NHS or GMC frameworks
  • MAPAS applicants face a separate 5-station Specialty Interview requiring authentic cultural identity reflection — unique to New Zealand

Te Tiriti o Waitangi — Starter Question Bank

The following sample questions reflect the type of prompts used in the Auckland MMI Te Tiriti station and may also arise in Otago structured interviews. These are starter questions — practise forming your own reflective answers, not memorised responses.

Q1.What are the three articles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and how do they apply to healthcare in New Zealand?
Q2.How should a doctor uphold the principle of tino rangatiratanga (Māori self-determination) when working with a Māori patient?
Q3.Why do Māori experience worse health outcomes in New Zealand, and what systemic factors contribute?
Q4.What does cultural safety mean to you, and how does it differ from cultural awareness?
Q5.How does Te Whatu Ora — Health New Zealand give effect to Te Tiriti obligations in its workforce policy?
Q6.A Māori patient declines a recommended treatment and wishes to consult with their whānau first. How do you respond?

Always read the official text of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the New Zealand Ministry of Health's guidance on Te Tiriti obligations. The above questions are indicative only.

MCNZ Code of Ethics — Key Points for Interviews

The Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ) publishes a Code of Ethics that all registered medical practitioners must uphold. Familiarity with its core principles demonstrates professional awareness in your interview responses.

Patient autonomy

Respect every patient's right to make informed decisions about their own healthcare, including the right to refuse treatment.

Confidentiality

Protect patient information except where disclosure is legally required or necessary to prevent serious harm.

Cultural safety

Practise in ways that do not diminish, demean, or disempower the cultural identity and wellbeing of patients — including Māori whānau.

Duty of candour

Be open and honest with patients when things go wrong, and support a culture of accountability within your team.

Note: Always consult the official MCNZ website (mcnz.org.nz) for the full and current Code of Ethics. The above summaries are for interview orientation only and do not constitute legal or professional guidance.
