About University of Illinois College of Medicine (MD)

The University of Illinois College of Medicine, founded in 1881, is the largest medical school in the US by class size and a flagship public medical training institution for the state of Illinois. With campuses in Chicago, Peoria, and Rockford, UIC Med provides a distributed clinical training model spanning urban academic medicine and community hospital care. (The former Urbana-Champaign regional site is now the separate, independently accredited Carle Illinois College of Medicine.) The Chicago campus is closely affiliated with UI Health (University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System), one of the largest safety-net hospital systems in the Midwest.

Course & teaching

Integrated curriculum. 4-year MD distributed across Chicago, Rockford, Peoria, and Urbana-Champaign campuses. Year 1–2 are campus-specific; clinical years (Year 3–4) are completed at affiliated hospitals and community clinical sites near each campus. The Chicago campus offers access to Level I trauma care, transplant medicine, and major subspecialty programs.

Applicants participate in two traditional individual or panel interviews lasting 30 minutes each, one usually with a faculty member and one with a current student. Interviewers have reviewed the application in advance. The day includes a financial aid session, a campus tour, and an informal lunch with current students. The regional campus model means some applicants may be interviewed at the campus they express interest in attending.
