Overview

About Harvard Medical School (MD)

Harvard Medical School (HMS), founded in 1782, is one of the oldest and most prestigious medical schools in the world, located in the Longwood Medical Area of Boston. It offers a New Pathway curriculum combining problem-based learning with rigorous basic science. Graduates consistently match into the most competitive residency programs nationally.

The school is closely affiliated with 11 major Boston hospitals including Massachusetts General, Brigham and Women's, and Beth Israel Deaconess.

What makes Harvard Medical School (MD) different

HMS operates two MD curriculum tracks — Pathways and Health Sciences & Technology (HST, offered jointly with MIT) — giving students genuine program choice. Affiliation with the Harvard–MIT HST program offers a research-intensive MD-PhD track. The school does not rank students academically, replacing grades with a Pass/Fail/Honors system.

Tutor insight
HMS MMI stations test communication, ethical reasoning, and self-awareness — not just factual knowledge. Prepare structured frameworks for ethical dilemmas (autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, justice) and practice articulating your thought process concisely in 8-minute windows. Research experience is very strongly weighted at HMS; applicants without meaningful lab or clinical research exposure will be at a significant disadvantage. Apply broadly to reach schools alongside HMS — acceptance rates of ~2% mean even outstanding applicants are waitlisted.

Motivation: Why Medicine and Not Another Health Profession

You clearly value patient care, but nurses, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners all care for patients — and several of those paths are shorter and less expensive than the MD or DO route. Why medicine specifically, rather than one of these other health careers?

Likely follow-up · What did you observe about the physician's role, versus the PA's or NP's, that made you choose the longer path?

US Healthcare Ethics: The Coverage Gap

Millions of low-income adults in non-Medicaid-expansion states fall into a coverage gap: their income is too high to qualify for Medicaid under their state's rules but too low to receive marketplace subsidies under the ACA. A patient in your clinic is one of them -- she has Type 2 diabetes, cannot afford insulin, and is rationing doses.

Her state has not expanded Medicaid. What are the ethical obligations of her physician, and what practical options exist?

Likely follow-up · What is the difference between a physician's duty to an individual patient and a physician's duty to advocate for systemic change?
