Read it right

How to read your percentile

Three things worth knowing before you draw conclusions from a percentile rank.

What a percentile rank means

Your percentile rank is the percentage of test-takers who scored at or below your score. A 90th-percentile total means you scored higher than or equal to 90% of everyone who tested — it is a ranking against peers, not a percentage of questions correct.

Total vs section percentiles differ

A given scaled score sits at a different percentile in each section, because the sections have different score distributions. A 128 is the 85th percentile in Chem/Phys but the 90th in CARS — always read the section-specific column.

Percentiles update every May 1

The AAMC recalculates percentile ranks each May using the three most recent testing years. This tool uses the table in effect May 1, 2026 – April 30, 2027 (2023–2025 data). Older score reports may show slightly different percentiles.
