About FSU College of Medicine (MD)

Florida State University College of Medicine was founded in 2000. Its clinical model is unusual: rather than one central academic medical center, students train at one of six regional campuses across Florida. FSU Med's mission centers on primary care and on serving underserved populations in Florida's rural and coastal communities. The school was designed to address Florida's statewide physician shortage.

It has a strong record of producing primary care physicians who practice where they trained.

What makes FSU College of Medicine (MD) different

FSU Med's six-campus distributed model is essentially unique among US allopathic medical schools. Students are assigned to a regional campus based on preference and institutional need — this means your third and fourth year will be spent in Daytona Beach, Fort Pierce, Orlando, Pensacola, Sarasota, or Tallahassee.

This model produces physicians who are genuinely embedded in Florida communities, with strong match rates into primary care and community practice. FSU has one of the highest percentages of underrepresented minority students among Florida medical schools.

FSU College of Medicine (MD) course & teaching

Integrated curriculum. 4-year MD. Years 1–2 at the Tallahassee main campus; Years 3–4 at one of six regional campuses across Florida. The distributed model means students receive longitudinal, community-integrated clinical training in the Florida region they are assigned to, with exposure to the specific health challenges and patient populations of that community.

FSU College of Medicine uses an informal traditional format: each applicant has two one-on-one interviews, of up to 50 minutes each, with members of the Admissions Committee, held virtually on Zoom. The interviews are non-blind.

They focus on motivation for medicine, commitment to primary care and to underserved populations across Florida's diverse communities, and fit with FSU's distributed clinical campus model. FSU has six regional campuses across Florida: Tallahassee, Daytona Beach, Fort Pierce, Orlando, Pensacola, and Sarasota. Interviewers therefore assess whether you are comfortable with geographic flexibility, and with community-based rather than academic-center training.
