The hour is run the way your school runs its interview, because the thing that catches people out is rarely the content — it is the shape of the room. Most US MD and DO programs in our profiles interview conversationally and fewer run an MMI, and some record both.
Traditional one-on-one
188 of 227 US MD and DO programs in our profiles record a traditional or panel interview
A conversation with one interviewer — a faculty member, physician, admissions committee member or student — that the AAMC describes as typically lasting 30 to 60 minutes. Open-file interviewers have read your application; closed-file interviewers know little beyond your name. Your tutor runs it the way your school does, and follows up wherever your answer was thinnest.
Free traditional interview guide →Panel interviews
12 programs in our profiles record a panel specifically
Two or more interviewers at once, each taking a line of questioning, so you have to hold a thread while the next question comes from someone else. Many schools hold two shorter interviews in a day instead. Your tutor probes the way a panel does: follow-up questions on the weakest part of each answer.
Traditional and panel guide →MMI circuit
49 of 227 US MD and DO programs in our profiles, alone or alongside a traditional interview
A circuit of short, timed stations with a new rater at each — typically a couple of minutes to read the prompt and several to answer, with no going back. The mock runs a circuit rather than a conversation: the reading time, the bell and a station you have not seen. The skill being tested is starting well under time pressure, over and over.
Free MMI guide →Virtual interviews
The AAMC recommends that medical schools interview virtually
Each school decides for itself, and your invitation will say which to expect. Live virtual interviews run on video platforms such as Zoom; some MMIs use Kira Talent, which can be live or one-way, with answers recorded against pre-recorded prompts. Your mock is live over video too, so you rehearse the camera, the sound and your eye contact as well as the answers.
DO programs
61 of 64 DO programs in our profiles record a traditional or panel interview
The format is usually much like an MD interview, with one question you should expect: why osteopathic medicine? Know the whole-person philosophy behind it, and the mock will test whether your answer is specific to you rather than a definition.
MD vs DO guide →Dental schools
75 of 78 US dental schools in our profiles record a traditional or panel interview, and 9 an MMI
Dental interviews ask a different set of questions from medicine — why dentistry, what you have done to see the work up close, access to dental care — and reward different answers. Choose dentistry at checkout and the mock is prepared for the dental school you name.
