Sydney Dental vs UQ Doctor of Dental Medicine

Sydney Dental and UQ Doctor of Dental Medicine are both Australian dental schools, but the path to an offer at each is meaningfully different. Sydney Dental is in New South Wales while UQ Doctor of Dental Medicine is in Queensland. State of origin matters here: several schools rank local applicants ahead of interstate ones.

Both select on GAMSAT, so a single sitting can support both applications.

GAMSAT
Minimum 50 in each section is a hard eligibility hurdle for standard applicants. The guide exempts Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants from that hurdle, but this is not a blanket waiver of GAMSAT: under the Indigenous Facilitated Entry Scheme for applicants with a bachelor's degree, eligible GAMSAT results must still be submitted and 50 per section is 'preferred', with the Indigenous Admissions Advisory Group able to recommend applicants who score lower. Only the postgraduate-degree and Bachelor of Oral Health Indigenous schemes require no GAMSAT result at all. USyd ranks DMD applicants on individual section scores. For 2027 entry, eligible GAMSAT sittings are September 2024, March 2025, September 2025 and March 2026 only — USyd requires results from the past two years "despite any contrary advice from ACER or GAMSAT", and notes this requirement may change for future cycles. (International applicants may instead submit US DAT or Canadian CDAT results; see the international admission-test note for the current minima.)

Sydney Dental vs UQ Doctor of Dental Medicine - in detail

Admission tests compared

GAMSAT cut-offs. Sydney Dental — Minimum 50 in each section is a hard eligibility hurdle for standard applicants. The guide exempts Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants from that hurdle, but this is not a blanket waiver… UQ Doctor of Dental Medicine — Minimum 50 in each section, sat within 4 years prior to the year of commencement.

Timing shapes the choice as much as the score. GAMSAT is graduate-only and sits in March and September; UCAT-ANZ is mostly undergraduate and sits in July. A few schools run their own selection model with no national test at all.

ATAR and academic profile

Sydney Dental requires Bachelor's degree of at least 3 years FTE, with at least 2 years FTE completed at the awarding institution, completed by 1 January of the commencement year; UAC Qualifications Assessment Service GPA of at least 5.0/7.0 (4.5 for the rural facilitated-entry scheme), assessed as at 4 June 2026 for 2027 entry; GAMSAT with a minimum of 50 in each section (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants excepted); and the English language requirement.

USyd sets no overall-GAMSAT requirement, and there is no interview for standard domestic applicants — ranking is on GAMSAT section scores.

UQ Doctor of Dental Medicine requires A bachelor’s degree in health, allied health, physical sciences or biological sciences with a GPA of 5.0 on a 7-point scale; university-level human anatomy and human physiology or cellular physiology completed within the 10 years before commencement; GAMSAT sat within 4 years prior to the year of commencement with a minimum score of 50 in each section; and completion of a situational judgement test in the year of application.

Applications are made directly to UQ, not through GEMSAS.

Graduate-entry GPA. Sydney Dental — Minimum GPA 5.0/7.0 as calculated by UAC's Qualifications Assessment Service, assessed as at 4 June 2026 for 2027 entry — a hard hurdle, and the same one the USyd MD applies, not a lower one. The 4.5… UQ Doctor of Dental Medicine — Minimum GPA 5.0 on a 7-point scale.

Read every ATAR figure as a selection rank, not a raw score. Educational access bonuses, rural-origin uplift and Indigenous pathways all adjust it, so the published number is rarely the one that decides your application.

Interview formats

Sydney Dental and UQ Doctor of Dental Medicine interview in the same broad format, so the underlying prep approach is the same — practise ethics frameworks, Australian health-system topics (Medicare, rural workforce, Indigenous health) and (for MMI) structured station responses against a timer.

That said, the specifics differ slightly: Sydney Dental runs no interview for standard domestic applicants — ranked on gamsat section scores (international applicants submit a portfolio and may be interviewed); UQ Doctor of Dental Medicine runs no interview — selection on gpa, gamsat and a situational judgement test. Mock practice tailored to each school's exact format is the highest-leverage prep.

Curriculum and teaching style

Intake size: Sydney Dental — USyd anticipates 76 domestic DMD offers for 2027 entry — 30 Commonwealth Supported (TBC, a number that includes places reserved for undergraduate Double Degree Dentistry students) and 46 Domestic Fee-Paying (TBC) — per the DMD Offer Preferences (August 2026).

These are anticipated offers, not a confirmed intake: 'The University reserves the right to make more or less offers than anticipated, at the discretion of the Dean, Faculty of Medicine and Health.' International offers are additional and not published.; UQ Doctor of Dental Medicine — UQ does not publish the intake size for this programme..

A larger cohort means more peer breadth; a smaller cohort means more tutor contact.

Which is right for you?

Check your state of origin before you apply — Sydney Dental draws heavily on New South Wales applicants and UQ Doctor of Dental Medicine on Queensland, and an interstate application often faces a materially higher bar.

Your preference list should ultimately weight: which admission test you can realistically score well in, whether your state of origin gives you a bonus at either school, and where you'd actually want to live for four to five years.

Common questions

Sydney Dental uses GAMSAT. UQ Doctor of Dental Medicine uses GAMSAT. Both schools share the same test stack — your single sitting can support both applications. GAMSAT is graduate-only and sat in March/September; UCAT-ANZ is undergraduate-leaning and sat in July; some schools (notably Bond and JCU) run their own selection model with no national test.
