Australia has no single admissions body. Your route decides which schools exist for you, which test ranks you, and which of GEMSAS, a state TAC or the school's own portal you apply through.

How it works

How the generator decides

Three passes, in order. Nothing is averaged into a single opaque score — every verdict names the rule that produced it, so you can check it against the school's own admissions guide before you commit a preference.

The hurdle, then the ranking metric — the structural difference from the UK. An Australian school has both, and which is which changes school by school: Newcastle ranks on UCAT-ANZ once you clear an ATAR of 94.30, UQ Dental does the reverse, and Wollongong turns GAMSAT and GPA into pure hurdles and ranks on Casper. Each verdict says which of the two you failed.

Then the structural filters — state-of-origin effects, rural and bonded quotas, full-fee-only programmes, Year 12 prerequisites and the schools that run no admissions test at all. These decide whether a place exists for you before any score does.

A ranked order, and how many applications it is — the picks that survive are kept, the rest are replaced by the closest comparable school, the whole list is ordered because an Australian preference is binding, and it is then split by GEMSAS, your TAC and the direct applications.

UCAT-ANZ bands come from NGMP AU TrueScore, our own prediction of the score needed for an interview, quoted on the current /2700 scale with a confidence rating per school. Schools that do not use UCAT-ANZ carry no band and are ranked on whatever they do use.

One hand-authored rule set per programme — 22 medical and 10 dental — covering ATAR floors, GAMSAT section minimums, GPA weighting formulas, Casper policy, prerequisites, place types and the rural and bonded quotas that decide who is actually in the pool.

Hurdle ≠ targetBoth figures kept

Australian schools publish minimums far below what gets an interview — Adelaide's ATAR 90 against a typical 99.75, Griffith's GPA 5.0 against its own warning that the real bar is “significantly higher”. Both numbers are stored separately and you are ranked against the competitive one.

The generator knows which of GEMSAS, UAC, VTAC, QTAC, SATAC, TISC or the school's own portal each preference is lodged with, and tells you how many separate applications your list actually is — with the mid-September GEMSAS preference lock called out.

A shortlisting model, not a prediction

No Australian university publishes a guaranteed cut-off — most say outright that thresholds float with the applicant pool every year. Use the generator to narrow the field to a defensible preference order, then verify every one against the school's current admissions guide, the GEMSAS booklet or your TAC listing before your preferences lock.

Frequently asked questions

Because Australia runs two separate admissions systems and you are only in one of them. School-leaver entry is ranked on ATAR and, at most schools, UCAT-ANZ; graduate entry is ranked on GPA and GAMSAT. The three dual-pathway universities (Monash, UWA, Tasmania) keep their streams entirely separate — you enter one set of rankings, not both. So the generator asks for the numbers that apply to your route and ignores the rest rather than collecting scores it will never use.

From NGMP AU TrueScore, our own per-school prediction of the UCAT-ANZ score needed to be competitive for an interview, published on the current /2700 three-subtest scale. No Australian university publishes a guaranteed cut-off — thresholds float with the applicant pool every year — so every band is an evidence-based estimate derived from each school’s published selection weighting, reputable percentile reporting and the official UCAT-ANZ distribution, with a confidence rating attached. Schools that do not use UCAT-ANZ carry no band and are ranked on whatever they do use.

Because they publish none, and inventing one would be worse than saying so. Several catalogue entries quote 2024-cycle cut-offs on the retired /3600 four-subtest UCAT scale, which is not convertible to the current /2700 scale — a 3060 is not a 2295. Rather than converting them, those figures stay as prose in the school’s note and the school is marked "not published". Bond is similar for a different reason: it runs its own psychometric test, so no UCAT or GAMSAT score transfers there at all.

Yes, and more than in the UK. A GEMSAS preference order is binding: you are offered the highest-ranked preference where you receive both an interview and a post-interview offer, and you cannot reorder after offers issue. That means a school you would rather attend must sit above one you are more likely to get, or the more likely offer simply arrives first and ends your cycle. The generator therefore hands back a ranked list — stretches high, matched schools through the middle, one that protects the cycle at the bottom — rather than an unordered shortlist.

Because a six-school preference list is rarely one application. GEMSAS covers ten graduate-entry schools in a single form, but Sydney, Flinders, Bond and JCU all run their own portals with their own deadlines and fees, and undergraduate entry routes through your state Tertiary Admissions Centre instead. A list that mixes them is three applications, not one — and missing a direct-application deadline while your GEMSAS form sits submitted is one of the most common ways an Australian cycle is lost.

As the schemes actually define it: five consecutive or ten cumulative years in an MM2–7 location, not simply living outside a capital city. It is the single largest structural lever in Australian admissions — Newcastle drops its ATAR hurdle from 94.30 to 85, La Trobe’s Regional Benefits Program drops a 99+ dentistry rank to 85, Charles Sturt reserves roughly 80% of interview offers for rural applicants, and Deakin’s Tier 1 rural stream removes the GAMSAT requirement entirely. Because every school runs its own pathway and almost none publish the criteria. Ticking it surfaces each school’s named pathway — Cadigal at Sydney, Murrup Barak at Melbourne, Miroma Bunbilla at Newcastle, CAMDH at UWA, Wirltu Yarlu at Adelaide — along with what is publicly known about how it works, including where UCAT, GAMSAT or Casper is waived. Inferring a lower numerical bar from that would be inventing one. Contact the school’s Indigenous admissions unit directly: several can consider applicants well outside the standard ranking.

Only if you are eligible for both, which most people are not. School leavers cannot apply to graduate entry because it requires a completed bachelor degree. Current undergraduates can apply to graduate entry for the year they will finish. Existing degree-holders can technically use their ATAR for undergraduate medicine through a state TAC, but most undergraduate medical schools restrict graduate applicants. The dual-pathway schools keep their streams entirely separate — you choose one, you cannot enter both rankings.

No. It is a shortlisting model. It tells you which hurdles you clear, which band each school ranks on, where your score sits against it, and what a preference order built on that would look like. It cannot know this cycle’s applicant pool, how a school will weight its interview, or how you will perform on the day — and at schools where the interview is worth half the final rank (Melbourne, UWA, Wollongong, WSU) that is most of the decision. Verify every preference against the school’s current admissions guide before you lock your order in.
