Graduate entry medicine in Australia
GEMSAS, GAMSAT, GPA and every route for graduates
Most graduates apply through GEMSAS, one application covering ten programs at nine universities, with up to six ranked preferences. Sydney and Flinders take direct applications, and Monash's graduate entry is closed to outside graduates. Most routes need at least 50 in each GAMSAT section and a GPA near 5.0, but those are only hurdles, and each school ranks you differently. GEMSAS has not yet published 2028 dates.

What graduate entry medicine means in Australia
Graduate entry medicine is a Doctor of Medicine (MD) for people who already hold a degree. Most programs take four years. Graduates can then apply for provisional registration with the Medical Board of Australia and complete an internship, as any other medical graduate does.
The routes fall into three groups. GEMSAS, the Graduate Entry Medical School Admissions System, is one application covering ten programs at nine universities. Sydney and Flinders run their own applications. A third group of schools built for school leavers also takes graduates, usually on GPA and UCAT-ANZ rather than GAMSAT.
Any degree can qualify. GEMSAS says it accepts any discipline and does not favour particular fields, and Sydney and Flinders also take graduates from any subject. Your degree matters through its marks, its age and whether it meets a school's rules on length and level.
How GEMSAS works: one application, six preferences, one interview
These rules come from GEMSAS for the 2027 intake. Confirm each one when GEMSAS publishes its 2028 guide.
Check you are eligible
GEMSAS is for domestic applicants: Australian and New Zealand citizens, Australian permanent residents and Australian humanitarian visa holders. You need a completed three-year bachelor or honours degree, or to be in its final year. Other applicants apply directly to universities.
Sit GAMSAT, and Casper if you need it
Most schools need GAMSAT. Notre Dame and Wollongong also need Casper. Your GAMSAT ID cannot be changed after you submit.
Apply and pay
You submit one application and pay one fee, which was $275 for the 2027 intake. Rank up to six preferences, and choose which place types you would accept at each school. If you submit more than one application, only the first is assessed.
Send your documents
Follow the Documentation section of your account. Results from many Australian universities arrive through the Automated Results Transfer System (ARTS). Rural claims, bonus forms and other evidence have their own deadlines.
Interview at one school
You receive one interview offer at most from a GEMSAS application. Only applicants who are interviewed can receive a course offer. Melbourne's direct pathways are the one exception: they can bring an additional interview.
Receive one offer
You can receive one course offer per intake. If you are not offered a higher preference, you are considered for lower ones. If you decline an offer or let it lapse, you are not considered for another offer that intake.
GEMSAS schools for the 2027 intake compared
GEMSAS calls its quotas indicative and subject to change. The GPA and GAMSAT figures are minimums to be considered, and the scores that win a place are usually far higher.
| School | GPA rule | GAMSAT rule | Casper | Domestic places |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ANU | Weighted 5.0 | 50 overall and in each section. Overall score used | No | 63 CSP, 26 BMP. About 40 places are reserved for ANU pathway students |
| Deakin | Weighted 5.0. 2020 results excluded | 50 overall and in each section. Overall score used | No | 100 CSP, 45 BMP |
| Griffith | Unweighted 5.0 | 50 overall and in each section. Overall score used | No | 148 CSP, 60 BMP, including 80 Medical Science Pathway places |
| Macquarie | Weighted 5.0, or a WAM of 65 | 50 overall and in each section. Overall score used | No | 60 full-fee. Up to 30 interview places for Macquarie Clinical Science students |
| Melbourne | 5.0, weighted 1:2:2 over the last three years | 50 in each section. Average of sections used | No | 179 CSP, 71 BMP, up to 45 full-fee |
| Notre Dame Fremantle and Broome | Weighted 5.2 | Average of 52, with 50 in each section | Yes | 80 CSP, 20 of them at Broome, and 32 BMP |
| Notre Dame Sydney | Weighted 5.2 | Average of 52, with 50 in each section | Yes | 40 CSP on its school page, 17 BMP, up to 57 full-fee |
| UQ | 5.0 across the whole key degree, weighted by credit | 50 in each section. Average of sections used | No | 107 CSP, 43 BMP |
| UWA | Unweighted 5.5 | 55 overall, with 50 in each section. Overall score used | No | 74 CSP, 29 BMP |
| Wollongong | Weighted 5.5, a hurdle only | 50 overall and in each section, a hurdle only | Yes | 37 CSP, 30 rural end-to-end CSP, 27 BMP |
GEMSAS's quota page shows 43 CSP for Notre Dame Sydney, but its total of 149 only fits the 40 shown on the school page. A CSP is a Commonwealth Supported Place. A BMP is a Bonded Medical Program place.
| School | Interview selection | Interview format | Offer ranking |
|---|---|---|---|
| ANU | GPA and GAMSAT, 50:50 | Two-part, online, 4 to 11 September 2026 | Interview 50, GPA and GAMSAT composite 50, plus research bonuses |
| Deakin | GPA and GAMSAT combined. At most 220 interviewed | Online MMI, up to six stations of five minutes | GPA, GAMSAT and adjustments 50, MMI 50 |
| Griffith | GPA and GAMSAT, 50:50 | GUMSAA, a recorded one-way format on the SAMMI system | Selection rank 50, interview 50 |
| Macquarie | Weighted GPA and GAMSAT, 50:50 | In-person MMI, 26 September 2026 | GPA 50, MMI 50 |
| Melbourne | GPA and GAMSAT weighted equally | Eight-station recorded online MMI | GAMSAT 25, GPA 25, interview 50 |
| Notre Dame | GAMSAT, GPA, Casper, bonus points, 30:30:30:10 | Recorded, asynchronous online MMI | Those four combined 50, interview 50 |
| UQ | GAMSAT average and GPA, 50:50 | Online MMI, September 2026 | Merit order within each pathway, regional pathways before Greater Brisbane |
| UWA | GPA 60, GAMSAT 40 | Online, between 22 September and 3 October | GPA 30, GAMSAT 20, interview 50 |
| Wollongong | Casper 50, admissions bonuses 50 | Online, eight-station MMI with live interviewers | Interview 70, bonuses 30 |
Rural and other special routes use different weights. MMI means Multiple Mini Interview: a series of short timed stations.
A GPA of 5.0 will not get most people an interview. Griffith says the GPA needed for selection is likely to be well above 5.0, and Macquarie says its cut-off is likely to be significantly higher. UWA reports that successful domestic interview applicants for 2026 averaged a GPA of 6.82 and a GAMSAT of 68.53.
Schools outside GEMSAS: Sydney, Flinders, Monash and others
A GEMSAS application does not cover these schools. Each one has its own application, fee and dates.
| School | How you apply | What it asks for |
|---|---|---|
| Sydney | Directly, with your GPA calculated by UAC's Qualifications Assessment Service | GPA of at least 5 and at least 50 in each GAMSAT section, from the past two years only. Ranking uses section scores, not overall or average scores. No interview on the standard route. |
| Flinders | Directly. The 2027 fee was $160, plus $65 if you book an interview | Unweighted GPA of 5.00, at least 50 in each GAMSAT section, and a panel interview. Interview, weighted GPA and GAMSAT count equally. It has no 10-year rule. |
| Monash | Directly, but only with a designated degree | A WAM of at least 70 in a nominated Monash degree or Federation University's Gippsland Partnership Biomedical Science degree. Other domestic applicants are not considered. |
| Bond | QTAC, code 020741. Applications for 2027 run from 5 to 19 January 2027 | A cumulative GPA above 6 as the benchmark, then an online psychometric test and an online interview. About 20 per cent of up to 180 domestic places. |
Sydney also expects assumed knowledge in anatomy, physiology and molecular biology, supported by a compulsory online Foundation Knowledge Course after you enrol.
Flinders publishes its cut-offs, which few schools do. For the 2027 main round, the GAMSAT overall score needed for interview was 76 for applicants outside its Flinders graduate and rural groups, 64 for Flinders graduates and 61 for Rural Bedford Park applicants. At least 25 per cent of places are for non-Flinders graduates and at most 75 per cent are for Flinders graduates.
Monash's four-year graduate entry is closed to most graduates, and about 70 per cent of its domestic places are held for its own Biomedical Science graduates. Its graduate route also has 35 End-to-End Rural places for 2027 entry.
School-leaver programs that also take graduates
UNSW
University graduates are assessed on GPA and UCAT-ANZ, then interview. No GAMSAT is involved.
Western Sydney
You need UCAT-ANZ from the current year. A completed undergraduate degree needs a GPA of 5.5, or 5.2 for Greater Western Sydney applicants. That threshold is checked only for applicants who interview.
Curtin
Higher education applicants need a notional ATAR of at least 92 from a completed qualification, plus UCAT-ANZ and Casper.
Charles Darwin
A completed bachelor-level qualification from the past ten years with a GPA of 5.0, and no extra admissions test. Places are heavily weighted to Northern Territory residents and First Nations applicants.
GAMSAT for graduate entry, and when you can avoid it
This section covers how schools use your score. For the test itself, read our full GAMSAT guide.
Your GAMSAT counts differently depending on where you apply. ANU, Deakin, Griffith, Macquarie, UWA and Flinders use the overall score, which counts the science section twice. Flinders gives the formula as Section I plus Section II plus twice Section III, divided by four. Melbourne, Notre Dame and UQ use a plain average of the three sections, so each section carries the same weight.
Sydney uses neither. It ranks on individual section scores and does not publish how. Wollongong uses GAMSAT only as a hurdle, so once you clear it a higher score adds nothing there.
| GEMSAS schools | Four years. For the 2028 intake, sittings from September 2023 to March 2027 count. |
|---|---|
| A September sitting | Results from a September sitting cannot be used for the intake you apply for that year. |
| Sydney, 2027 entry | Past two years only: September 2024 to March 2026. Sydney says this may change for future intakes. |
| Flinders, domestic | A valid GAMSAT taken within the last four years. |
Alternatives and exceptions
Domestic applicants have no real substitute. At Melbourne, Macquarie, Sydney and Flinders, MCAT is open to international applicants only, and Melbourne and Macquarie limit it to those living outside Australia.
The exceptions are specific routes. Griffith, UQ, Wollongong and Sydney's Indigenous scheme do not require GAMSAT from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants, and Macquarie makes it optional. Melbourne does not require it for Guaranteed Entry, or if its MD Rural Pathway or Indigenous pathway is your only preference. Deakin waives it for Tier 1 Rural Training Stream applicants.
GPA for graduate medicine: how it is calculated and weighted
GEMSAS calculates GPAs on a 7-point scale from your key degree, which is your most recent eligible qualification. It groups your last three full-time years of study into three GPA years, known as Final, Final-1 and Final-2. These follow your study load and not the calendar. Percentage marks are used where available, and grades are converted where they are not.
Most schools then weight recent study more heavily, usually three times for the Final year, twice for Final-1 and once for Final-2. A weighted GPA is therefore the weighted scores added together and divided by six. If your GPA years are 6.5, 6.0 and 5.5, from most recent to oldest, your weighted GPA is 6.17 and your unweighted GPA is 6.0.
If you are in your final year, GEMSAS uses results up to Semester 1 for a provisional GPA, and any offer is conditional on your final results. Deakin confirms an offer if your GPA falls by 0.4 or less, and Melbourne usually does if it falls by 0.3 or less. UWA wants at least 5.5 in your final semester.
| School | Method | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| ANU, Deakin, Macquarie, Notre Dame | Weighted 3:2:1 over the last three GPA years | Macquarie gives honours or postgraduate coursework the top weight, and Deakin can count honours as the final year. |
| Wollongong | Weighted 3:2:1, hurdle of 5.5 | GPA is not used in ranking once you clear the hurdle. |
| Melbourne | Last three undergraduate years, weighted 1:2:2 | Honours counts only if finished by mid-year in the application year. Most 2020 results are excluded. |
| Griffith, UWA | Unweighted over the last three years | UWA counts a completed PhD as a GPA of 7.0 and adds 0.2 for a completed research master's. |
| UQ | The whole key degree, weighted by credit value | Includes failed attempts and does not split your study into GPA years. A GPA between 5.0 and 5.75 is reviewed for equivalency. |
| Sydney | Calculated by UAC. Minimum 5, or 4.5 for rural applicants | The guide says ranking rests on admissions test results. Combined degrees count as a whole. |
| Flinders | Non-weighted minimum of 5.00, then weighted over the last three years after interview | Master's and PhD study is not counted in the weighted GPA or selection rank. |
Lifting a low GPA
Later study can replace older marks, but rules differ. Griffith says a graduate certificate or diploma is not a key degree. Flinders suggests a one-year bachelor degree or honours year, finished by 31 July of the application year. Check before you enrol.
The 10-year rule
ANU, Griffith, Macquarie, Melbourne, Notre Dame, UQ, Wollongong, Deakin and Sydney want a recent degree, usually within 10 years, or further study to refresh it. UWA and Flinders have no such rule.
Ungraded subjects
Ungraded passes usually count toward your load but add no GPA value. Each GPA year needs enough graded study. Griffith gives a value of 4.5 to ungraded passes above 0.5 of a full-time year.
Estimate it yourself
GEMSAS offers an online GPA calculator and a guide to doing it by hand. Its paid rough estimate service closed on 2 October last cycle. You can end up with different GPAs at different schools.
Portfolios, bonuses and Casper in graduate entry
Australian graduate entry is mostly scores and interview. A few schools add a form of portfolio, and three programs use Casper.
Wollongong's admissions bonuses
The closest thing to a portfolio. Twelve equally weighted, cumulative bonuses include first preference, registered health professional, sustained work, service, rural work, Illawarra residence and financial disadvantage. Bonuses make up half of interview selection and 30 per cent of the offer score. Evidence was due by 15 June 2026.
Deakin's adjustments
Percentages are added to your GPA and GAMSAT score. You get 4 for 12 months of Ahpra-registered clinical practice, 2 for two years of full-time work, 4 for Deakin study, 2 for financial disadvantage, and 4 or 8 for rurality.
Notre Dame's bonus points
Worth 10 per cent of interview ranking. They reward rural background, research degrees and, at Fremantle, 10 years of WA residency. Notre Dame says it does not consider work or extracurricular experience.
Research degree bonuses
ANU adds 2 per cent for a standalone honours degree or research master's, and 4 per cent for a PhD. UWA and Notre Dame also reward completed research degrees. Macquarie gives 3 per cent to its own Clinical Science students.
Written applications
Deakin's Rural Training Stream has a three-part written application. Sydney's Dubbo stream needs a personal statement in its own template. Most standard routes ask for none of this.
Casper
Casper is an open-response situational judgement test from Acuity Insights. Notre Dame Fremantle, Notre Dame Sydney and Wollongong need it, and Curtin needs it for its own MBBS. GEMSAS's school entries name no other such test, and none mentions Altus.
How to choose and order your GEMSAS preferences
List only schools you would attend, in the order you want them. Then check the place type and campus rules.
Start with what you can reach. Match your GPA and GAMSAT to how each school ranks you. A strong GPA and a modest GAMSAT favour UWA's 60:40 interview selection. A high GAMSAT with a thin GPA is better at a school using a plain 50:50 mix. Wollongong ignores both once you clear the hurdles, and rewards Casper and bonuses instead.
Your interview score travels with you. GEMSAS says it is standardised and may be used by your lower-preference schools, so one good interview can help more than one preference. Only one interview is offered, so an offer you would not take can cost you.
| School | How place types are handled |
|---|---|
| ANU | Allocated by your ranking and your preferences. |
| Deakin | Only the types you list are considered, in the order CSP and BMP. |
| Griffith | Only listed types are considered, in your preferred order, but this is not guaranteed. You also rank Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast. |
| Macquarie | All places are full-fee, allocated by ranking. |
| Melbourne | Order is CSP, BMP, full-fee, whatever order you list. Once offered a full-fee place you cannot swap into a CSP or BMP. |
| Notre Dame | Order is CSP, then BMP, then full-fee at Sydney only. |
| UQ and UWA | Your stated preference is ignored. Order is CSP, then BMP. |
| Wollongong | Rural End-to-End places first, then the other tracks. Track and place type choices were due 27 September 2026 and cannot be changed later. |
Before you lock in your six
- Do I meet every hurdle at each school, including 5.5 at UWA and Wollongong and 5.2 at Notre Dame?
- Have I booked Casper if Notre Dame or Wollongong is on my list?
- Wollongong gives a bonus for listing it first. Does that change my order?
- NSW rural-origin applicants who list Wollongong first and meet the minimums get a guaranteed interview. Does that apply to me?
- Have I selected every place type I would accept? GEMSAS advises selecting all of them, because limiting yourself reduces your options.
- Would I accept an offer from every school listed, given that declining ends that intake?
CSP, BMP or full-fee: what graduate medicine costs
Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP)
- Subsidised by the Australian Government. You pay a student contribution.
- The 2027 contribution for medicine and dentistry is $14,046 for a full-time year, per the University of Sydney's table.
- A Bonded Medical Program place is a CSP with a commitment to work in eligible regional, rural or remote areas after graduation.
- Previous BMP holders must have met all obligations before GEMSAS can offer them a CSP or BMP.
Full-fee place
- Not subsidised. You pay the full cost of the course, which each school sets.
- Macquarie: all 60 domestic places are full-fee.
- Melbourne: up to 45 domestic full-fee places.
- Notre Dame Sydney: up to 57 domestic full-fee places.
- ANU, Deakin, Griffith, UQ, UWA, Wollongong and Notre Dame Fremantle list no domestic full-fee places.
Offers generally run in merit order and fill CSPs first, then BMPs, then full-fee places where a school has them. Pick only fee types you can pay. Notre Dame Sydney warns that accepting confirms your fee category for the whole program, and it allowed one change to full-fee selection by 2 October 2026. Melbourne's fee-type requests closed on 25 September 2026.
Sydney's domestic offers for 2027 entry are all Commonwealth supported: about 141 Metropolitan CSPs, 66 Metropolitan BMPs and 24 Dubbo CSPs, including about 30 for its own double degree students. Flinders offers bonded and non-bonded CSPs in South Australia, and its NT program is funded by the NT Government in return for service there.
Graduate entry timeline: what is published for 2028 entry
As of 7 November 2026, GEMSAS shows only 2027 intake dates, and ACER's site still shows 2026 registration details. We will not guess. The table shows last cycle's dates so you can see the shape of the year.

Calculate your GPA for each school
Use the GEMSAS calculator and the table above. If you are short of a hurdle, decide now whether further study could help before the deadline.
Watch for ACER's 2027 GAMSAT dates
The March sitting is the last one that counts for the 2028 intake. If you already hold a valid score, check that it falls in the window, and in Sydney's shorter one if you are applying there.
Read every guide when it appears
Rules change each year. Read the GEMSAS guide and school entries, then the Sydney and Flinders guides, before you commit to preferences.
Apply and book Casper
Last cycle GEMSAS was open for only four weeks. Late applications are not accepted. Have your degree details, rural evidence and bonus forms ready before it opens.
Prepare for interview
Last cycle interview offers came in early September and interviews soon after, so begin practising before offers arrive.
Graduate entry dentistry routes in Australia
GEMSAS covers medicine only. Graduate dentistry programs take direct applications, and all four below use GAMSAT.
| Program | Entry rules | Selection | Applications |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sydney, Doctor of Dental Medicine | GPA of at least 5, or 4.5 for rural applicants, and at least 50 in each GAMSAT section from the past two years | Ranked on admissions test results | 21 April to 4 June 2026 for 2027 entry |
| Melbourne, Doctor of Dental Surgery | A degree and GAMSAT. Check Melbourne's page for its prerequisite subjects | WAM and GAMSAT weighted equally. Check with Melbourne whether it interviews | Check Melbourne's page for the closing date |
| UWA, Doctor of Dental Medicine | GPA of at least 5.5, and GAMSAT of 55 overall with 50 in each section | Shortlist on GAMSAT 40 and GPA 60. Final rank GPA 30, GAMSAT 20, MMI 50 | 1 to 31 May, through UWA, not GEMSAS |
| UQ, Doctor of Dental Medicine | Health or science degree, anatomy and physiology within 10 years, GPA of 5.0, 50 in each GAMSAT section, and a situational judgement test | Average GAMSAT 70, situational judgement test 30 | Direct to UQ, closing 30 September the year before you start |
UQ's 3.5-year DMD lists a summer start of 3 January 2028. Check Melbourne's current requirements and dates on its own course page before you apply.
Bonding does not apply to dentistry, so a dental CSP carries no Commonwealth return of service. Sydney warns that if you start its DMD in a fee-paying place, you cannot later move to a Commonwealth Supported Place in that program.
