Mature-age entry to medicine and dentistry
Routes, recency rules, funding and living costs
We found no upper age limit in the eligibility rules we read for Australian medical and dental schools. Most career changers take a four-year graduate program, which usually needs a bachelor degree in any field, a GPA of about 5.0 or more and GAMSAT. Two rules catch people out: ten-year degree recency limits, and HELP and CSP limits that count what you have already used.
- Upper age limit
- None in the rules we read
- Usual degree recency rule
- 10 years (UWA, Flinders: none)
- HELP limit for medicine, 2027
- A$193,259
- CSP fee per year, 2027
- A$14,046

Is there an age limit for medicine or dentistry in Australia?
We found no upper age limit in the rules we read. GEMSAS, the shared graduate application service, sets none on its eligibility and policy pages, its school entries state none, and UNSW's applicant page sets none. Schools set minimums instead. UNSW asks applicants who would be under 16 at the start of Year 1 to talk to it first, and Adelaide's work and life experience route starts at 18.
Age does not change the rules, but it changes what they cost you. Older degrees can fall outside a ten-year window, earlier loans count against HELP limits, and a full-time program is harder to fit around a mortgage or children. The rest of this guide deals with those three problems.
What are the routes into medicine and dentistry for mature-age applicants?
| Route | Who it suits | Where it runs |
|---|---|---|
| Graduate medicine through GEMSAS | You hold, or are finishing, a three-year bachelor degree in any field. | ANU, Deakin, Griffith, Macquarie, Melbourne, Notre Dame (Fremantle and Sydney), UQ, UWA and Wollongong. |
| Graduate medicine, direct application | As above. Sydney has its GPA assessed by UAC, and Flinders runs its own process. | Sydney and Flinders. Monash graduate entry takes only nominated Monash degrees and one Federation University degree. |
| Graduate dentistry | You hold a bachelor degree, and at UQ one in a health or science field. | Sydney and UWA (DMD), Melbourne (DDS), and UQ (DMD, listed start January 2028). |
| Undergraduate program as a non-school leaver | You have some tertiary study, or want to avoid GAMSAT and accept a longer course. | UNSW, Western Sydney, the Joint Medical Program, Curtin, JCU, Bond and Charles Darwin. See the table below. |
| Work and life experience | You have never enrolled in higher education. | Adelaide medicine: age 18 or over, a competitive STAT score and the subject prerequisites. |
| Enabling pathway | You are a current or recent Open Foundation or Newstep student at Newcastle, with sustained socioeconomic disadvantage. | Joint Medical Program, Excellence Through Equity Pathway: up to six places, with a lower UCAT-ANZ threshold. |
Graduate entry rules by school: degree recency, GPA and GAMSAT
These are minimums for 2027 entry, not competitive scores. UWA's domestic interviewees for 2026 averaged a GAMSAT of 68.53, and Macquarie warns the GPA needed for interview is likely to be significantly higher than its minimum.
| School | Degree recency | Minimum GPA (out of 7) | Minimum GAMSAT |
|---|---|---|---|
| ANU | Within 10 years of application | 5.0 weighted | 50 overall, 50 in each section |
| Deakin | Within 10 years of commencement | 5.0 weighted | 50 overall, 50 in each section |
| Flinders | No 10-year rule | 5.0 | 50 in each section |
| Griffith | Within 10 years of commencement | 5.0 | 50 overall, 50 in each section |
| Macquarie | Within 10 years of enrolment | 5.0 weighted, or WAM 65 | 50 overall, 50 in each section |
| Melbourne | Within 10 years of commencing | 5.0 | 50 in each section |
| Notre Dame | Within 10 years of application closing | 5.2 weighted | Average of 52, with 50 in each section |
| Sydney | Within 10 years before 1 January of entry | 5.0, or 4.5 for rural applicants | 50 in each section, past two years only |
| UQ | Within 10 years of commencement | 5.0 in the key degree | 50 in each section |
| UWA | No 10-year rule | 5.5 | 55 overall, no section below 50 |
| Wollongong | Within 10 years of application closing | 5.5 weighted | 50 overall, 50 in each section |
Tasmania's 2027 graduate pathway uses GPA and GAMSAT, but we could not confirm its minimums. Macquarie's places are all full fee.
| School | Published requirements |
|---|---|
| Sydney DMD (2027) | Same 10-year rule and two-year GAMSAT window as its MD. Minimum GPA 5.0, or 4.5 for rural applicants. Full-time, in-person attendance is required. |
| UWA DMD | No 10-year rule. Selection GPA of at least 5.5. No specific prerequisites. GAMSAT valid for four years. |
| UQ DMD (start January 2028) | Bachelor degree in health, allied health, physical or biological sciences at GPA 5.0. Anatomy and physiology within 10 years. GAMSAT within four years, with 50 in each section. |
Melbourne's DDS is also graduate entry. We could not read its current page, so check its prerequisite subjects directly.
What if your degree is more than ten years old?
UWA and Flinders both say they have no 10-year rule. Elsewhere you usually need newer study, and at some schools it can be as little as half a year.
| School | What can restore eligibility |
|---|---|
| ANU | At least 0.5 FTE of further study at bachelor level or higher. |
| UQ | At least 0.5 FTE of later study at bachelor level or higher, at GPA 5.0. |
| Deakin | 0.5 FTE of Honours, graduate certificate, graduate diploma or coursework masters by 23 December, or a research degree. |
| Griffith | One year of full-time tertiary study within the past 10 years, by 31 July of the application year. |
| Melbourne | A graduate diploma, masters or PhD within the last 10 years. |
| Notre Dame | Another qualification at bachelor level or higher, by 31 July of the application year. |
| Sydney | A postgraduate degree or diploma of at least one FTE year, a research degree, or sustained research productivity. |
| Wollongong | Graduate diploma level study or higher, or an approved waiver. Waiver requests for 2027 closed on 20 May 2026. |
| Bond | Its limit is nine years. You need 1.5 FTE years of undergraduate study or one FTE year of postgraduate coursework. |
Recent study also matters for GPA. Notre Dame, ANU, Macquarie, Wollongong and Deakin weight your most recent year three times as heavily as the earliest of the three they count. UQ is different: it uses your whole key degree.
Undergraduate routes with non-school-leaver criteria
These programs take five or six years, but they do not ask for GAMSAT. Several need a UCAT-ANZ from the year you apply, however long ago you left school. JCU uses no admissions test, and Bond uses its own assessment.
| Program | Length | Rule for applicants with a degree |
|---|---|---|
| UNSW | 6 years | No graduate pathway, but degree holders can apply as tertiary applicants at GPA 5.5, or 4.8 for rural applicants. |
| Western Sydney | 5 years | Completed degree: GPA 5.5, or 5.2 for Greater Western Sydney. Class I or II Honours needs no minimum GPA. |
| Joint Medical Program | 5 years | Your most recent program counts. A completed bachelor degree needs better than a pass average. |
| Curtin | 5 years | Notional ATAR of at least 92 from a completed qualification, plus UCAT-ANZ and Casper. |
| JCU | 6 years | Tertiary study is required, with an unweighted GPA of 5.75 for results to be assessed. JCU says most offers go to school leavers. |
| Charles Sturt | 5 years | Uses ATAR or GPA, depending on your status as a current high school leaver. We could not confirm its current GPA figures. |
| Bond | Five program years | GPA above 6 is the competitive guide. Results must be from the past nine years. |
| Charles Darwin | 5 years | GPA 5.0, in a qualification completed within 10 years of commencement. |
Adelaide medicine is closed once you hold more than two years of study. Its degree route is only for students of Adelaide University and its antecedents.
How to fund medicine or dentistry as a mature-age student
| CSP student contribution | A$13,558 per full-time year in 2026 and A$14,046 in 2027 for medicine and dentistry. A CSP is a Commonwealth supported place, part-funded by the government. |
|---|---|
| Four years at the 2027 rate | About A$56,200, before annual changes. |
| HELP limit, 2027 | A$193,259 for medicine and dentistry, and A$134,558 for most other students. |
| What counts towards it | Earlier FEE-HELP, VET FEE-HELP and VET Student Loans, plus HECS-HELP borrowed from 1 January 2020. |
| Getting room back | It is not a lifetime limit. Repayments made after 1 July 2019 restore room, up to the current limit. |
| Reaching the limit | You pay any remaining fees upfront. |
| FEE-HELP loan fee | The 20% fee does not apply to postgraduate study and does not count towards the limit. |
| Student Learning Entitlement | A lifetime allowance of CSP study: seven full-time years, plus extra for some courses. Without enough, you cannot take a CSP. |
| Bonded Medical Program | A CSP in return for 156 weeks in eligible locations, within 18 years of finishing. You must agree by 30 June of first year. |
You borrowed A$40,000 of HECS-HELP since 2020 for a commerce degree, and have repaid A$10,000.
A$30,000 counts, leaving about A$163,000 of the 2027 medicine limit. A four-year CSP at the 2027 rate is about A$56,200, so it fits. A full-fee place may not. Macquarie's domestic places are all full fee, so read the fee page before you preference one.
Earlier CSP study reduces your Student Learning Entitlement, but medicine has extra room. Study Assist's own example, a bachelor degree followed by postgraduate medicine, adds four years of additional entitlement. Check your balance on myHELPbalance before you apply. If you are considering a bonded place, read the bonded medical places guide first, because not completing the service can make the CSP cost repayable.
Living costs, income support and paid work
Austudy is the main payment if you are 25 or older and studying full time in an approved course, and it has no maximum age. Youth Allowance covers full-time students aged 18 to 24. ABSTUDY is a separate payment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. The maximum Austudy rate for a single person with no children was A$799.70 a fortnight from 1 January 2026, or about A$20,800 a year.
| Source | Who it describes | Estimate |
|---|---|---|
| UQ, Brisbane | Student living off campus | A$1,326 to A$3,739 a month |
| UQ, Brisbane | Two adults and one child, not counting childcare | A$3,755 to A$5,461 a month |
| UNSW, Sydney | International student, from modest on-campus living to alone in an apartment | About A$28,860 to over A$40,820 a year |
No school we read sets a limit on paid work, but these are full-time programs. Sydney requires in-person attendance, Charles Sturt's Years 3 to 5 are at rural clinical schools, and Deakin's Rural Training Stream places you at a rural site for all four years. Plan your finances as if paid work will be casual at most.
A realistic plan for a career change into medicine or dentistry
Check the date on your degree
Compare it with each school's window. ANU counts from the date your degree was conferred, and other schools count from application or commencement.
Work out your GPA
Apply each school's weighting to your final three years, because the same transcript gives different results. In 2026 GEMSAS also ran a paid estimate service from 8 September to 2 October.
Check your HELP balance and entitlement
Use myHELPbalance, and work out what a CSP and a full-fee place would each leave you.
Book GAMSAT
Registrations for the March 2027 sitting open in November 2026, and the fee in Australia is AUD$568. A September sitting cannot be used for that year's intake.
Fill any gaps in science
A science degree is not required for most medicine routes, but Sydney assumes knowledge of anatomy, physiology and molecular and cellular biology. It offers a pre-medical course in December for applicants without a health science background.
Apply, and plan for more than one cycle
Flinders closed on 27 July 2026. GEMSAS had not listed 2028 dates when we checked. Deferral is rarely possible, so apply when you could really start.
How to explain a career change in interviews and written statements
Formats vary, and some routes have no interview at all. Where you do face questions, expect to be asked why you are changing and why now.
You have worked in another field for several years. Why medicine or dentistry, and why now?
Answer with a specific moment and what you did next, not a general wish to help people. Show that you tested the decision: time spent talking to clinicians, the science you have refreshed, and the cost you have already weighed up.
- Name what you bring from your work, with one real example.
- Show you understand the training path that follows graduation.
