Tasmania Medical School - 2027 Entry Requirements & Interview Format

Tasmania delivers the only medical program in the state — a 5-year undergraduate Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine (BMedScMD) anchored at the Sandy Bay (Hobart) campus with placements across Royal Hobart Hospital, Launceston General Hospital, and the North West Regional Hospital (Burnie), distinguished by Tasmania's sole medical pipeline and a deliberate no-interview "ATAR-first, UCAT tiebreaker" selection model.

What to expect at a Tasmania interview

UTAS is one of very few Australian medical schools with no interview, no CASPer, and no formal personal-statement scoring. Applicants are ranked by ATAR (school-leaver) or GAMSAT/GPA (graduate), with UCAT-ANZ as secondary ranking (tiebreaker among ATAR-equivalent applicants). UTAS uses the combined scores of the 3 cognitive subtests of the UCAT-ANZ (Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making, Quantitative Reasoning), excluding Situational Judgement.

What makes Tasmania different

Tasmania is the only medical school in the state. ATAR thresholds 99.95 (non-rural) / 99.45 (rural or Tasmanian) have held flat since at least 2022 — UCAT serves only as a tiebreaker. Aboriginal Entry Pathway (palawa) waives UCAT and the clinical aptitude test. Graduate Entry stream of 25 places/year includes the Medical Research Stream (~50% of grad places).

Tutor insight

UTAS is unusual: no interview, no CASPer, no personal statement scoring. Your ATAR (or graduate GAMSAT/GPA) is the primary lever and UCAT serves as a tiebreaker. Tasmanian residency or rural origin materially lowers the competitive ATAR from 99.95 to 99.45 via the Tasmanian Rural Training Stream. If you're applying as a graduate, the Medical Research Stream reserves ~50% of the 25 grad places — invest in articulating a credible research trajectory.
