Camden is one of the most economically distressed cities in the US, and Rowan-Virtua SOM trains students there with Cooper. What draws you to practising in a community facing that level of challenge?

Be specific about Camden: concentrated poverty, community violence, environmental burdens such as lead and air quality, and limited primary-care access. Show evidenced commitment that goes beyond 'I want to help people'.

Rowan-Virtua SOM has a strong primary-care and community-medicine emphasis. How does that align with where you see your career?

Primary care, family medicine, and community health are central to the mission. Even if you are drawn to another specialty, show genuine respect for, and ideally experience in, front-line community medicine.

As a public New Jersey school, Rowan-Virtua SOM serves the state's residents. What ties do you have to New Jersey, or to communities like the ones it serves?

Authentic connection to NJ or to similar urban/suburban underserved settings strengthens the case. If you are out of state, articulate a credible, specific reason for choosing this mission.

New Jersey has a large immigrant population, including many undocumented residents. How should the healthcare system approach caring for undocumented patients?

NJ coverage for undocumented children and (expanding) adults, FQHC access, EMTALA obligations, and the ethical case for care regardless of status. Show structural awareness and compassion.

A patient at the Cooper safety-net clinic repeatedly misses appointments and is labelled 'non-compliant' by staff. How do you think about that label?

Challenge 'non-compliant' framing: transport, work, childcare, health literacy, and trust all drive missed visits. Reframe toward barriers and the social determinants of health rather than blame.

You have a fixed clinic schedule and a patient with complex social needs is taking far longer than allotted, while others wait. How do you handle the competing duties?

Balance the individual patient against the waiting cohort; use the team (social work, care coordination), prioritise safety, and address systemic time pressures. Show practical judgement, not idealism.

Tell me about a time you built trust with someone from a very different background to your own.

Concrete example showing cultural humility, listening, and follow-through. Connect to Camden's diverse, underserved population where trust is hard-won and essential.

Describe a situation where you had to give difficult feedback or news to someone. How did you approach it?

Empathy, clear language, and checking understanding. Show emotional intelligence and that you can sit with the other person's reaction.

Medical school and COMLEX-USA are demanding. Walk me through how you study and how you would adapt under pressure.

Specific, evidence-based methods (active recall, spaced repetition) and honest self-awareness. Name COMLEX accurately, and USMLE only if you intend to sit both.

Is there anything in your academic history you would want the committee to understand in context?

Own any dip or non-traditional route, explain the lesson learned, and point to sustained improvement. No excuses or blame.

You are a student and a Camden patient with poorly controlled hypertension says they have stopped their medication because it is 'not worth it'. Talk to them.

Explore the real reason (cost, side effects, hopelessness, mistrust) without judgement, then problem-solve and rebuild engagement. Show the patient-centred, whole-person approach.

A classmate is visibly burning out and has started missing group work, leaving others to carry the load. Speak with them.

Lead with concern, not accusation; encourage support services; balance compassion with the team's needs. Show professionalism and empathy together.

You are shown data showing markedly higher childhood asthma ED visits in Camden than in surrounding suburbs. How do you interpret and respond?

Environmental drivers (housing quality, mould, air pollution from highways/industry), access to primary care and controller meds, and structural inequity. Propose clinic-level and community-level interventions, not blame.

What experience tested your commitment to medicine, and why did you stay the course?

Reflective and specific. Show you understand the difficulty of safety-net work and that it strengthened your resolve.

A patient asks you not to document their substance use in the record for fear it will affect their employment. How do you respond?

Balance honesty, accurate documentation, and confidentiality; explain who can access records and why complete documentation matters for safe care, while addressing their legitimate fears.
