Methodology

For each school we collect the published Freedom-of-Information cut-off data for the most recent 3-6 entry cycles, identify the year-on-year trend (rising, stable, drifting), apply a small upward bias to account for growing applicant pools, and cross-check against the school's published admissions policy guidance for the upcoming cycle.

Data sources

  • Freedom-of-Information requests submitted directly to each school's admissions office (typically annual)
  • School-published cycle-by-cycle admissions reports
  • UCAT Consortium decile + percentile data for the relevant test year
  • Medical Schools Council (MSC) Selecting for Excellence guidance
  • Direct conversations with current admissions tutors and current medical students at each school

Confidence tiers

High

Schools with stable multi-year cut-offs (variance ≤ 100 UCAT points across 4+ cycles), clear published methodology, and FOI data through to the most recent cycle.

Moderate

Schools with directional trend but year-on-year variance > 100 points, or methodology recently revised (e.g. introduction of contextual quotas).

Indicative

Schools with limited FOI data, recently-introduced courses, or known methodology overhauls in the prediction year. Treat as a starting point only.

Historical accuracy

Tracked retrospectively against the 2026 entry cycle:

  • High confidence: 38 of 46 schools predicted within ±50 UCAT points of the actual cut-off (83% within tolerance).
  • Moderate: 6 of 8 schools within ±100 points (75% within tolerance).
  • Indicative: Flagged as best-effort — not assessed against a fixed tolerance.

We publish a per-school accuracy log alongside each annual update. Past predictions remain available for transparency.

Frequently asked questions

What is NGMP TrueScore?
NGMP TrueScore is our predicted minimum UCAT score required for invitation to interview at each UK medical school in the upcoming application cycle. Predictions are tier-aware (Home / Contextual / Scottish / Rest of UK / International / Graduate where each tier exists), include a confidence rating, and are updated annually after each cycle's Freedom-of-Information data lands.
How is TrueScore calculated?
For each school we collect the published Freedom-of-Information cut-off data for the most recent 3-6 entry cycles, identify the year-on-year trend (rising, stable, drifting), apply a small upward bias to account for growing applicant pools, and cross-check against the school's published admissions policy guidance for the upcoming cycle. Schools with stable multi-year cut-offs receive "high confidence" predictions; schools with volatile or recently-changed methodology receive "moderate" or "indicative".
How accurate has TrueScore been historically?
For high-confidence predictions (schools with multi-year stable cut-offs and clear FOI history) our retrospective accuracy on the 2026 entry cycle was within ±50 UCAT points for 38 of 46 schools. Moderate-confidence predictions were within ±100 points for 6 of the remaining 8. Indicative predictions are explicitly flagged as best-effort.
When is TrueScore updated?
After each cycle's FOI data lands (typically October of the calendar year following each entry cycle), we publish refreshed predictions for the upcoming cycle. The next major update will be Q4 2026 for 2028 entry predictions.
Why are some schools missing from TrueScore?
A small number of UK medical schools do not publish UCAT cut-off data via FOI and do not provide enough public guidance to support a confident prediction. These schools show no TrueScore card on their how-to-get-in page, and we recommend you rely on the published thresholds + our school-specific selection-methodology notes.
Can I cite NGMP TrueScore in research?
Yes. NGMP TrueScore is published as an open Schema.org Dataset under CC-BY-NC 4.0. Please cite it as: "NextGenMedPrep TrueScore — UCAT Cut-Off Predictions for [cycle year] Entry, NextGenMedPrep, [year], https://nextgenmedprep.com/truescore." Does TrueScore replace the official school cut-offs?
No. TrueScore is an independent prediction based on historical patterns. The official source of truth is each school's published admissions guidance for the cycle in question, which is updated by the school after our prediction. Always cross-check our prediction against the official source.
