UK Medical School Rankings — Entry Difficulty

2027 Entry · Ranked by NGMP TrueScore

UK medical schools ranked by the UCAT score needed to be invited to interview for the current entry cycle. Higher rank = harder UCAT bar = harder entry. Built from multi-year FOI cut-off data + each school's published admissions guidance.

Where TrueScore data is missing, the school is shown at the bottom of the list (not unranked — just not yet in our annual FOI dataset). For methodology details see /truescore.

What we rank by

Most published UK medical school rankings (The Times, Guardian, QS) blend research output, student satisfaction and graduate employability. Those are useful for graduate-quality questions but not for an applicant choosing where to apply. We rank by entry difficulty for the current cycle because that is the actionable signal: which schools require the highest UCAT score, which are most realistic for an average-strong profile.

Rank tier groupings below: Top tier (TrueScore 2,500+, top 10% of UK applicants need apply), Upper tier (2,200-2,499, top 25%), Mid tier (1,900-2,199, top 50%), Lower entry tier (< 1,900, accessible to applicants with average UCAT but typically other strict criteria).

TrueScore = predicted UCAT score for invitation to interview at the school for the current entry cycle. Tier (home/scottish/ruk/international) shown where the school separates by domicile.

Rank tiers explained

Top tier

TrueScore 2,500+

The hardest UK medical schools to enter. Roughly top 10% of UCAT performers needed. Imperial College London, Cambridge, Oxford and several other top-25 universities sit here.

Upper tier

TrueScore 2,200-2,499

Highly competitive — top 25% of UCAT performers typically. Most top-30 UK medical schools sit in this tier.

Mid tier

TrueScore 1,900-2,199

Realistic for applicants with median-to-strong UCAT profiles. Most successful UK medical school applicants land here.

Lower entry tier

TrueScore < 1,900

Accessible UCAT bar — but typically compensated by stricter GCSE, personal statement or interview weightings. Often the most realistic route for borderline UCAT applicants who shine in other areas.

Frequently asked questions

How are UK medical schools ranked?
Common rankings use different criteria: research output (REF), student satisfaction (NSS), graduate employability (HESA), or league-table aggregates (The Times, Guardian, QS). We rank schools by ENTRY DIFFICULTY for the current cycle — the UCAT score and academic profile needed to secure an offer — because that is the most actionable signal for an applicant choosing where to apply.
Are the UK medical school rankings the same every year?
No. Both entry-difficulty rankings and traditional league tables shift year-on-year. UCAT cut-offs move with applicant volume; student-satisfaction scores change as cohorts cycle. Use rankings as a snapshot, not a permanent verdict.
Is Oxford or Cambridge the harder medical school to get into?
Both are at the top of the entry-difficulty distribution but on different dimensions. Cambridge demands the highest UCAT scores (~2,700+ typical floor) plus the BMAT-replacement interview rigour. Oxford weights interview performance heavily and uses college-specific traditional interviews with academic problem-solving. Most successful Oxbridge applicants are competitive at both.
What is the easiest UK medical school to get into?
No UK medical school is easy. Schools with relatively lower UCAT thresholds (e.g. Lincoln, Kent and Medway, Hull York, Norwich) have GCSE and personal statement weightings that compensate. Contextual / widening-participation routes (most schools have these) substantially reduce the UCAT threshold for eligible applicants. Check each school's how-to-get-in guide for the specific weighting.
Do rankings reflect quality of teaching?
Only partially. UK medical curricula are GMC-regulated to a common standard, so the quality floor is high everywhere. Differences between schools are more about teaching STYLE (PBL vs traditional vs integrated) and clinical-placement breadth than absolute quality. The NHS Foundation Programme produces high-quality junior doctors from every accredited UK medical school.
How does NGMP TrueScore rank schools?
TrueScore is our predicted UCAT score required for invitation to interview at each UK medical school for the current entry cycle. It is data-driven: Freedom-of-Information data on cut-offs across multiple cycles + current admissions guidance. Higher TrueScore = harder UCAT bar = harder entry. See /truescore for methodology.
