Overview

About Birmingham

Birmingham was the UK's first university to offer medicine and dentistry side by side. Its selection is GCSE-heavy with longer 6-minute MMI stations.

What makes Birmingham different

Selection is GCSE-heavy: 45% GCSE / 40% UCAT / 15% contextual. UCAT scored by national decile, so a clear top-decile score makes a big difference. Birmingham was the first UK university to offer dentistry and medicine programmes side by side.

Birmingham course & teaching

  • Cardiovascular medicine
  • Microbiome research

Intercalation at Birmingham

How the Birmingham interview runs

Format: Multiple Mini Interviews (MMI)

An MMI circuit of six or seven stations, each lasting 8 minutes including 2 minutes of preparation in which you are told the topic and, where relevant, the questions. The circuit mixes interview stations with role-play and calculation tasks. Your UCAT SJT band is used at this stage rather than for shortlisting.

Birmingham intake

380 home places and 28 international for 2025 entry, of which up to 6 international places are reserved for IMU-Malaysia students entering the clinical years.

Weighting

No fixed UCAT cut-off. Total application score is weighted 45% GCSE (max 4.5), 40% UCAT (max 4.0) and 15% contextual (max 1.5), out of 10. UCAT is converted by NATIONAL decile - 4.000 for the 10th decile down to 0.000 for the 1st - so a single decile is worth about 0.44 points. A non-contextual applicant can therefore reach at most 8.5. In the 2024-25 cycle the lowest standard applicant invited to interview scored 7.236, with a mean of 8.13.

SJT band

Used post-interview as one of the interview stations. B1=3/3, B2=2/3, B3=1/3, B4=0/3.

Contextual / WP eligibility

POLAR Q1/Q2 postcode + WP indicators give 0.6–1.5 contextual score uplift. Standard offer AAA → AAB for contextual.

Application score = 45% GCSE + 40% UCAT + 15% contextual, out of 10. UCAT is scored by national decile, from 4.000 for the 10th decile down to 0.000 for the 1st, so a decile drop costs about 0.44 points. The SJT band is not used for shortlisting - it comes in at interview.

FAQ

Birmingham — frequently asked questions

Home applicants: No cut-off. Birmingham states there is no minimum UCAT score - your total is converted to a national decile and fed into a combined application score.. Contextual applicants: No cut-off. Contextual applicants gain up to 1.5 extra points on the application score, scaled to their POLAR4 quintile, which lets a lower UCAT decile still reach the interview threshold.. International applicants: International applicants are not given an application score at all: they must meet an academic standard equivalent to A*AA and are then ranked on total UCAT alone..
