About Birmingham

Birmingham was the UK's first university to offer medicine and dentistry side by side. Its selection is GCSE-heavy with longer 6-minute MMI stations.

What makes it different

Selection is GCSE-heavy: 45% GCSE / 40% UCAT / 15% contextual. UCAT scored by national decile, so a clear top-decile score makes a big difference. Birmingham was the first UK university to offer dentistry and medicine programmes side by side.

Course & teaching

Integrated curriculum. Five-year MBChB with integrated science and clinical exposure from Year 1. Clinical placements across Birmingham-affiliated NHS hospitals (UHB, Russell's Hall, Heartlands).

Research strengths

Birmingham has notable research strength in Cancer & immunology, Inflammation & ageing, Cardiovascular medicine, Microbiome research.

Intercalation

Optional intercalated BMedSc - competitive entry.

Interview

Birmingham interviews via Multiple Mini Interviews (MMI). MMI format with around 8 stations covering clinical and ethical scenarios, motivation for medicine and personal qualities. Each station gives 2 minutes' preparation and 6 minutes to answer - noticeably longer than most other schools.
