Overview

About UCL

UCL runs an integrated London medical course with a conversational MMI and unusually strong emphasis on broad scientific and social-context understanding.

What makes UCL different

Cut-offs differ from Imperial - UCL's home threshold is lower while its international threshold is higher, partly because UCL holds more interviews relative to offers. SJT is only used as a tie-breaker between equally scored candidates.

UCL course & teaching

Integrated curriculum. Six-year MBBS BSc with compulsory intercalated BSc in Year 3. Clinical placements at UCL-affiliated NHS sites including UCLH, Royal Free, and Whittington.

UCL research strengths

UCL is strong in these research areas:

  • Translational neuroscience
  • Cancer biology
  • Population health
  • Cardiology

Intercalation at UCL

Compulsory intercalated BSc in Year 3.

How the UCL interview runs

Format: Multiple Mini Interviews (MMI)

Up to eight MMI stations of five minutes each, with one minute beforehand to read the instructions and two or three questions per station - around 50 minutes in total. Home fee-paying candidates are interviewed on campus; overseas candidates do the same MMI online. Stations are conversational and probe motivation, real-world medical and social issues, communication and scientific reasoning.

UCL intake

313 home and 24 overseas fee-status places per year (337 in total).

Entry requirements

What you need to apply to UCL

A-Level requirements
A*AA including A*A in Chemistry and Biology in either order. The third subject is your own choice, other than General Studies or Critical Thinking.
Contextual A-Level offer
AAB at A-level for Access UCL contextual applicants - Biology and Chemistry both at grade A
Required A-Level subjects
Chemistry and Biology both required
A-Level resit policy
Qualification resits are not accepted, including re-starting Year 12. GCSE resits are accepted.
GCSE requirements
Minimum grade 6/B in GCSE English Language and Mathematics. No score or assessment of other GCSEs. GCSE resits accepted.
Scottish Advanced Highers
A1,A,A at Advanced Higher (or A1,A at Advanced Higher plus A,A,A at Higher), to include Chemistry and Biology at Advanced Higher with either at A1. Highers alone are not sufficient.
International Baccalaureate
39 points overall, 19 at Higher Level - including HL 7,6,6 with HL Chemistry and HL Biology
Graduate-entry degree requirement
Graduates apply to the standard six-year MBBS BSc; there is no accelerated route. UCL expects at least ABB in A-levels taken before the first degree (or 34 IB points with 16 at Higher Level at 6,5,5). A graduate who meets the grade bar but lacks A-level Chemistry and/or Biology may sit them during or after the degree, at grade A* (or A*A if taking both).
UCAT Selection at UCL
Weighting

Wholly UCAT-based shortlisting once academic minimum (A*AA, A* in Chemistry/Biology) met. SJT only used as a tie-break between equal UCAT scores. Personal statement NOT used in selection. Offers based purely on interview performance.

Only used where candidates are on the same UCAT score

Contextual / WP eligibility

Access UCL contextual scheme: AAB offer with Biology and Chemistry at A (against A*AA standard) and a lower UCAT threshold (2,080 against 2,190 for 2026 entry). The advantage sits at the shortlisting stage - UCL reviews Access UCL interview scores as a separate pool and states it does not apply a specific uplift when making offers.

Contextual - lowest invited

International - lowest invited
23002026 entry

There is no fixed cut-off - UCL ranks candidates on total UCAT score and the threshold falls where the interview slots run out, so it moves every year with the applicant pool. Access UCL applicants are flagged automatically and their scores reviewed as a separate pool. SJT is used only to break ties between equal totals; the personal statement is not used in shortlisting.

How UCL interviews applicants

Format
Multiple Mini Interviews (MMI)
Interview window (2027 entry)
December 2026 - March 2027
Decision date (2027 entry)
Decisions are made after all the Interviews have been completed
Post-interview chances
Reasonable. Around 1,000 applicants are interviewed for 313 home and 24 overseas places, and UCL makes more offers than places because not every offer is taken up. Offers rest purely on interview performance, and UCL reviews home, international and Access UCL interview scores separately rather than applying an uplift to any group.
Tutor insight
Offers turn entirely on the MMI, so treat the interview as the whole application - UCL does not score your personal statement. With five minutes and two or three questions per station, answer in structured chunks rather than one long monologue. Read widely on current healthcare and social topics; UCL wants applicants who understand medicine in context, not just clinical fact recall.
