Overview

About Manchester

Manchester is one of the largest UK medical schools, with a five-station MMI, supportive interview style and strong clinical placements across Greater Manchester.

What makes Manchester different

The UK's largest medical school, with over 2,200 undergraduate medical students and strong research links. Thresholds are met-or-not rather than ranked, so clearing the UCAT bar with an SJT of Band 1 or 2 usually earns an interview; Bands 3 and 4 are not currently considered.

Manchester course & teaching

PBL curriculum. Five-year MBChB built around problem-based learning. Clinical placements distributed across Greater Manchester NHS sector hospitals from Year 3.

Manchester research strengths

Manchester is strong in these research areas:

  • Inflammation & repair
  • Cancer
  • Cardiovascular sciences
  • Mental health

Intercalation at Manchester

Optional intercalated BSc/MRes between Years 3 and 5.

How the Manchester interview runs

Format: Multiple Mini Interviews (MMI)

Five-station MMI including a role-play that assesses verbal and non-verbal communication and empathy, plus typical MMI questions on motivation, ethics and teamwork. One station may ask you to elaborate on parts of your application form.

Manchester intake

Manchester publishes 401 funded places across its medicine courses - the majority for home students and 28 for international students - plus a small number of additional self-funded or government-sponsored places on the graduate-entry programme.

UCAT Selection at Manchester
Weighting

Met-or-not cut-offs: applicants above the cohort UCAT threshold (with B1/B2 SJT and minimum GCSE) are interviewed. Personal statement not scored. GCSE used as minimum eligibility only (≥7 grade 7s, including English/Maths/2 sciences). When highly scoring candidates exceed slots, ranked by total UCAT + SJT band.

SJT band

Band 1 or 2 - do not currently consider B3/4

Contextual / WP eligibility

WP+ scheme: six GCSEs at grade 7+ accepted (against seven standard), offer reduced from AAA to AAB, and a lower UCAT threshold - 1,960 against 2,060 for 2026 entry. An ABB offer goes to applicants who are care-experienced or have refugee status (including the Ukrainian schemes), and to those who complete a Manchester widening-participation programme. Eligibility is set by the University's Contextual Data tool.

Met-or-not thresholds, set each November once results are in, so Manchester cannot confirm them in advance and they move year to year. Clear the threshold with an SJT of Band 1 or 2 and you are very likely to be interviewed; Bands 3 and 4 are not currently considered. Where high scorers exceed the interview slots, candidates are ranked on total UCAT and SJT band.
