About Manchester

Manchester is one of the largest UK medical schools, with a five-station MMI, supportive interview style and strong clinical placements across Greater Manchester.

What makes it different

Large medical school with a diverse student body and strong research links. Cut-offs are met-or-not - historically every applicant beyond the threshold has been interviewed. SJT band 1 or 2 required (band 3/4 not currently considered).

Course & teaching

PBL curriculum. Five-year MBChB built around problem-based learning. Clinical placements distributed across Greater Manchester NHS sector hospitals from Year 3.

Research strengths

Manchester has notable research strength in Inflammation & repair, Cancer, Cardiovascular sciences, Mental health.

Intercalation

Optional intercalated BSc/MRes between Years 3 and 5.

Interview

Manchester interviews via Multiple Mini Interviews (MMI). Five-station MMI including a role-play that assesses verbal and non-verbal communication and empathy, plus typical MMI questions on motivation, ethics and teamwork. One station may ask you to elaborate on parts of your application form.

What you need to apply to Manchester

A-Level requirements
AAA at A-level including Chemistry or Biology, plus one of Biology / Chemistry / Maths / Further Maths / Physics / Psychology. No use of predicted grades.
Contextual A-Level offer
AAB at A-level for WP+ contextual applicants. ABB for refugee or care-experienced (WP++) applicants.

At least 7 GCSEs at grade 7, 8 or 9. English Language or Literature, Mathematics, and 2 Science subjects must be at grade 6 or above. WP+/WP++: 6 GCSEs at grade 7+ accepted. GCSE resits permitted; up to one Level 2 BTEC may be counted.
International Baccalaureate
37 points overall, 7,6,6 at Higher Level including HL Chemistry or Biology plus one further science / Maths / Psychology
Graduate-entry degree requirement
2:1 (Upper-second-class Honours) or above. Accelerated A101 4-year Graduate Entry Medicine programme available - UCAT scored separately for graduates.

Met-or-not cut-offs: applicants above the cohort UCAT threshold (with B1/B2 SJT and minimum GCSE) are interviewed. Personal statement not scored. GCSE used as minimum eligibility only (≥7 grade 7s, including English/Maths/2 sciences). When highly scoring candidates exceed slots, ranked by total UCAT + SJT band.
