How to get into Edinburgh Medicine

Places are limited and the bar is high, so treat those grades as a threshold to clear rather than a target to aim at.

The UCAT is a 2-hour computer-based aptitude test of Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making, Quantitative Reasoning and a separately-banded Situational Judgement Test. It is taken between July and early September of the year you apply. Edinburgh uses Half-day assessment day, held at Edinburgh Medical School or online (Edinburgh describes it as 'not a typical MMI format'). For 2027 entry, interviews typically take place in December 2026 - February 2027. Final decisions are released March 2027 onwards.

At Edinburgh, expect the following from the MMI. Multiple Mini Interviews - typically 6-10 stations of 5-8 minutes each, often with reading time before each station. Stations rotate; assessors do not see your performance at previous stations, so a poor station does not derail the rest.

Edinburgh invites roughly the top 800 ranked applicants to a half-day assessment day, which it runs as a series of short interviews rather than a standard MMI circuit, and which includes a collaborative group task. Offers follow soon after the final assessment day. Expect questions on NHS policy, wider reading and personal experiences.

Shortlisting is dominated by the academic score: the UCAT total contributes 17.5% and the SJT band 7.5%, with the academic assessment carrying the rest. Every application is read independently by two admissions staff, and only your FIRST attempt at a required subject counts - retaking it in a different qualification does not help. An SJT of Band 4 ends the application outright, with no widening-access exemption. Strong research focus and international reputation.
