About Rutgers New Jersey Medical School (MD)

Rutgers New Jersey Medical School (NJMS), founded in 1954 (originally Seton Hall College of Medicine and Dentistry), is the oldest of Rutgers University's two medical schools and one of the largest allopathic schools in the Northeast. Located in the heart of Newark, NJMS trains physicians in a high-acuity, highly diverse clinical environment anchored by University Hospital. The school has a strong tradition of producing physicians who serve urban and underserved communities, with particular strengths in infectious disease, trauma, and primary care.

What makes it different

One of the largest public medical schools in the Northeast; located in Newark, NJ — a majority-minority city and historically underserved urban center. University Hospital (a Level I trauma center and safety-net hospital) is the primary teaching hospital. Home to the Global Tuberculosis Institute. One of the most racially and socioeconomically diverse medical school classes in the US.

Course & teaching

Integrated curriculum. 4-year MD. Pre-clerkship (Years 1–2): integrated organ-system blocks with clinical skills from Year 1. Year 3: core clerkships at University Hospital and affiliated community sites across Newark and North Jersey. Year 4: clinical selectives and required community health experience. Strong interprofessional education opportunities with Rutgers School of Dental Medicine, School of Nursing, and School of Public Health on the same campus.

Rutgers NJMS uses traditional one-on-one or two-on-one interviews lasting approximately 30 minutes per session. The interview day includes an orientation session, campus and hospital tour of University Hospital, lunch with current students, and a financial aid overview.
