Hull York Medical School (HYMS) uses Multiple Mini Interviews made up of a distinctive mix of station types. In person, you'll do a group exercise with up to 10 candidates, two mini-interviews, a 'student station' (where the interviewers are senior HYMS students), and an individual scenario station based on a pre-recorded video. You get five minutes' thinking time on the first question of each interview station.
For 2027 entry, Home fee status candidates interview in person at the University of Hull and University of York campuses, and overseas fee status candidates interview online. HYMS runs its MMIs each December and January and makes offers by the end of March.
You'll be scored out of 90 points in total: in person, the group exercise is worth 22 points and each of the other stations 17. The stations explore current medical and ethical issues, your insight into a career in medicine, critical thinking and problem solving, your personal qualities and your commitment to NHS core values — and you will not be tested on medical knowledge. They're looking for someone who can handle people, handle pressure, handle uncertainty — while staying kind and sensible.

Why medicine, and why HYMS specifically?
Reference HYMS's integrated curriculum, the mission of serving Hull and East Yorkshire (areas of significant health inequality), and the early clinical contact across two campuses.
What understanding do you have of health inequalities in the region HYMS serves?
East Yorkshire has notable life-expectancy gaps, higher cardiovascular disease, and recruitment challenges in primary care. Show informed awareness — HYMS explicitly probes this.

Contribute meaningfully without dominating. Listen and build on others' points. Invite quieter candidates in. HYMS scores collaboration, not "winning".

The student station is conversational. Be genuine — current HYMS students can spot rehearsal quickly. Show authentic motivation.
(Video scenario station) Watch this video of a patient consultation. What concerns would you raise about the doctor's approach?
Watch carefully. Note communication issues, empathy gaps, consent concerns. Structure your response: what you observed, why it matters, what better practice would look like.
A patient refuses a recommended treatment. They have capacity. What do you do?
Respect autonomy. Ensure understanding. Document. Don't coerce. Apply the four pillars naturally.
Should the NHS invest more in deprived areas to address health inequality?
Justice argues yes. Engage with practical implementation challenges (workforce, infrastructure). HYMS's regional mission makes this particularly relevant.
A patient is upset that they've been kept waiting. (Possible actor station.)
Acknowledge the inconvenience. Don't over-apologise for systemic issues. Offer concrete information and next steps.
Tell me about a time you demonstrated empathy.
Distinguish empathy from sympathy. Concrete example with reflection on what you learned.
What did your work experience teach you about being a doctor?
Pick one specific moment. Reflect on what was unexpected — emotional weight, communication, multi-disciplinary teamwork.
A teenager asks for contraception without parental knowledge. What do you do?
Gillick competence. If competent, confidentiality applies. Encourage but don't force parental involvement.
How would you handle a colleague who seems stressed and is making mistakes?
Approach with care. Listen first. Suggest support routes. Be honest about patient-safety implications. Don't lecture.
What concerns you about a career in medicine?
Honest concerns + management strategies. Workload, burnout, emotional toll. Show informed self-awareness.
