Social Media and Professionalism: Dental Students Online

Dental students and practitioners increasingly maintain public social media presences, sometimes sharing clinical content, commentary on healthcare policy, or personal views. Dental schools and the ADA have issued guidance on professional social media use. A dental student in your cohort posts a TikTok video with a brief clip of a patient in the chair (face visible) without the patient's explicit consent, captioned 'Day in the life of a dental student.' The video receives 50,000 views before it is taken down. How do you think about this incident, its consequences, and what it reveals about professionalism in the social media age?

Likely follow-up · The student claims the patient had given 'general permission' to be filmed as part of a dental school education consent form. Does this suffice, and why or why not?

Dental Therapists and Scope of Practice

A number of states have authorized dental therapists, mid-level providers who can perform routine restorative and preventive procedures under a dentist's supervision, partly to extend care into underserved areas. Organized dentistry has at times opposed expanding this role. You are asked at a state hearing whether dental therapists improve access or threaten quality and the profession. How do you reason through the competing arguments?

Likely follow-up · How do you separate a genuine quality-and-safety concern from professional self-interest when a profession resists new provider types?
