The University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry was established in 1971, and its first dental class graduated in 1976. It is the only dental school in Oklahoma and the state's main dental workforce training institution. The college sits at the OU Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City. An estimated 40.1 million Americans have diabetes (diagnosed and undiagnosed), and about 90–95% of them have Type 2, and bidirectional evidence links periodontal disease with glycemic control: poorly controlled diabetes worsens periodontitis, and treating periodontitis may modestly improve HbA1c.
