Read the guide →Meharry Medical College School of Medicine, founded in 1876 in Nashville, Tennessee, is one of America's four historically Black medical colleges and a cornerstone institution in the training of Black and underrepresented minority physicians in the United States. Founded just eleven years after the Civil War, Meharry arose to train Black physicians who were barred from virtually all other US medical schools. Today the school continues this mission: producing physicians who disproportionately serve underserved and minority communities across the nation. Its affiliation with Vanderbilt University Medical Center provides access to world-class academic medicine training alongside the distinctively mission-driven Meharry environment.
Meharry Medical College is one of the four remaining historically Black medical colleges in the United States (alongside Howard, Morehouse, and Charles R. Drew) and is the nation's largest private HBCU focused solely on health sciences education. Meharry has produced approximately 40% of all Black physicians practicing today — a remarkable legacy. The school is affiliated with Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Nashville General Hospital, combining HBCU mission with access to a major academic medical system.

Meharry Medical College (MD) interviews via Traditional individual interviews with faculty and admissions committee members. Meharry interview day is held in Nashville and typically includes one or two individual faculty or committee member interviews of 25–35 minutes each. Interviewers review the full application in advance and focus deeply on commitment to health equity, service to underserved and minority communities, personal resilience, and the significance of Meharry's historic HBCU mission to the applicant. The day includes a tour of Meharry's campus and affiliated Meharry-Hubbard Hospital, an admissions information session, and student interaction. Applicants who have not deeply reflected on the significance of Meharry's history and mission will be at a significant disadvantage regardless of academic credentials.
