Keele vs Sheffield

Keele's published UCAT threshold for home applicants is around 1700, while Sheffield sits at approximately 1800.

The 100-point spread is within year-on-year noise — for most applicants the two thresholds are effectively interchangeable, and other selection factors (GCSE weighting, interview score) will dominate.

Contextual / widening-participation cut-offs differ — Keele: ~1700+ /2700 with up to 3 contextual points (UCAT bursary, postcode, local school); Sheffield: 1800+ /2700 - Access to Sheffield (Medicine) and university pathway students who clear the minimum go straight to interview.. Eligible applicants should weight this heavily when choosing.

Keele requires A*AA at A-level (or AAA + grade A in EPQ as alternative).

Sheffield requires AAA at A-level including Chemistry or Biology, plus a second science. A pass in the practical element is required for science A-levels.

Keele is the stricter A-Level offer; Sheffield is slightly more forgiving. If your predicted grades are borderline, Sheffield carries the lower academic-rejection risk pre-interview.

GCSE profile matters at both schools — Keele: Five GCSEs at grade 7/A or above, plus minimum grade 6 in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics (6-6 Combined Science accepted as equivalent). Sheffield: Minimum five GCSEs at grade 7/A, plus grade 6/B or above in Mathematics, English Language and at least one science subject.

Keele uses Traditional (Two 15-minute structured online interviews (traditional format, not MMI; Microsoft Teams), usually around two hours apart); Sheffield uses MMI (Multiple Mini Interviews (MMI)). These two formats reward different skills — Traditional emphasises academic reasoning and thinking aloud through unfamiliar problems, while MMI rewards breadth and quick recovery.

If your strengths lie in conversational depth, either may suit you more. If you prefer discrete capsule answers under time pressure, Sheffield is the better fit.

Interview windows: Keele interviews in December - March; Sheffield in November - February.

Keele runs a Spiral curriculum; Sheffield runs a PBL curriculum. The teaching philosophies are different — Keele delivers more didactic lectures with structured systems-based progression, while Sheffield centres learning around clinical cases.

Specifics: Five-year MBChB with spiral curriculum. Strong rural/community placement strand across Staffordshire, Shropshire and Cheshire. Five-year MBChB with problem-based learning core. Clinical placements across Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and Yorkshire region.

Intake size: Keele — ~150 home + ~10 international places per year (5-year MBChB) + ~30 Health Foundation Year places.; Sheffield — Plans to invite ~1,150 home + ~100 international applicants for 2026 entry. ~250 places.. A larger cohort means more peer breadth; a smaller cohort means more tutor contact.

Keele: International: 23/54 = 43%; Home Non-Contextual: 167/491 = 34%. Sheffield: All Students (2024): 722/1029 = 70%; International: 55/104 = 53%.

Post-interview odds give you the clearest signal of how competitive each school is at the final stage — a school with a 60% post-interview success rate is structurally easier to convert than one at 25%, even if the interview thresholds look identical on paper.

Keele: Personal statement is heavily weighted (/15 of the /25 total score) - Keele has very specific PS criteria. Strong PS with band 1-2 SJT can compensate for relatively low UCAT. International applicants selected on UCAT only.

Sheffield: SJT used post-interview as a virtual MMI station rather than in shortlisting. Sheffield prioritises balanced performance - applicants achieving 3/5 or more in every section are favoured over those who peak in some and dip in others.
