UCAT-ANZ SJT requirements by school
A scaled score, not a band, and who uses it
UCAT-ANZ does not give Situational Judgement bands. Your SJT result is a separate scaled score from 300 to 900, and the 2026 median was 589. Several schools leave it out or use it only to split ties. Flinders, UQ dentistry and Auckland count it in a selection score, Otago sets a minimum, and a few schools publish nothing.

Does UCAT-ANZ use SJT bands?
No. The UCAT ANZ Consortium, the group of universities behind the test, says Situational Judgement results are expressed as a separate scaled score between 300 and 900. Its 2026 statistics report it the same way, with a mean of 580 and a median of 589.
Bands 1 to 4 belong to the UK test, UCAT UK. Some older Australian guides carried that language across, so you may read that Australian schools reject Band 4. None of the Australian or New Zealand school pages we read uses SJT bands.
Your SJT score is also not part of your total out of 2,700. That total is Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making and Quantitative Reasoning added together.
The one place bands apply to UCAT-ANZ candidates
| Band | UCAT-ANZ 2026 scale score |
|---|---|
| Band 1 | 658 to 900 |
| Band 2 | 596 to 657 |
| Band 3 | 502 to 595 |
| Band 4 | 300 to 501 |
The UK site publishes this for delivering 2026 results to UK and partner universities. It plays no part in Australian or New Zealand selection.
How the UCAT-ANZ SJT is marked and scaled
| Questions and time | 69 questions in 26 minutes, after 1 minute 30 seconds of instructions. |
|---|---|
| Scenarios | Hypothetical situations in a clinical setting or during medical or dental training, with up to six questions each. |
| What it assesses | Integrity, perspective taking, team involvement, resilience and adaptability. |
| Knowledge needed | No medical or procedural knowledge. |
| Marking | Full marks if your response matches the correct answer, and partial marks if it is close. There is no negative marking. |
| Your result | A scaled score from 300 to 900, reported separately from the total. |
What is a good UCAT-ANZ SJT score? The official figures
There is no pass mark. The Consortium's percentile look-up covers the total score, so use this table to find where your SJT score sits.
| Statistic | 2026 | 2025 | 2024 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Candidates | 17,341 | 16,950 | 15,240 |
| Mean | 580 | 586 | 569 |
| 1st decile (10th percentile) | 486 | 489 | 471 |
| 2nd decile | 525 | 529 | 512 |
| 3rd decile | 550 | 554 | 539 |
| 4th decile | 570 | 575 | 560 |
| 5th decile (median) | 589 | 593 | 578 |
| 6th decile | 607 | 611 | 596 |
| 7th decile | 621 | 629 | 614 |
| 8th decile | 640 | 649 | 632 |
| 9th decile (90th percentile) | 664 | 672 | 656 |
In 2026, a score above 589 beat at least half of candidates, and a score above 664 beat at least nine in ten. Every 2026 decile sat a little below 2025, so compare your score with the year you sat.
Six ways schools treat the UCAT-ANZ SJT
Each school decides for itself. The groups below are our summary of what each school publishes. The tables that follow give the detail.
Left out
UNSW, Newcastle and New England, Curtin, Griffith Medical Science and Tasmania say they use the cognitive score, or that the SJT is not considered.
Tie-break
Monash, UQ medicine provisional entry and UniSQ use it to separate equal scores. Adelaide uses it only at the lower ranks.
Counted in a selection score
Flinders, UQ dentistry and, for 2027 entry, Auckland add it in with the other three sections.
A minimum
Otago requires the 10th percentile or higher for 2027 entry, then gives UCAT-ANZ no further weight.
Right reserved
UWA leaves it out of the overall score it uses, but reserves the right to use it in selection.
Not published
Western Sydney and Charles Sturt publish nothing on it. Griffith dentistry and USC name only the Total Score.
SJT use at Australian medical and dental schools
From each school's own pages, read on 7 November 2026, for 2027 entry. Where a school publishes nothing about the SJT, the table says so.
| School and course | What the school publishes | In short |
|---|---|---|
| Adelaide medicine, dentistry, oral health | Sections 1 to 3 carry equal weight for interview. Section 4, the SJT, is used only for candidates in the lower rank with equal totals across the other three. | Tie-break at lower ranks |
| Charles Sturt medicine | UCAT scores set the ranked list for interview. Nothing names the SJT. | Not published |
| Charles Sturt dentistry | The course page showed no UCAT detail. UAC's entry, still carrying 2025 dates, refers to an overall percentile and does not name the SJT. | Not published |
| Curtin medicine | Ranks on the total UCAT-ANZ score, based on cognitive subtests, out of 2,700. | Not used |
| Flinders clinical sciences and medicine | 10% of the rank is a UCAT-ANZ-derived score based on all four sections, SJT included. | Counted |
| Griffith dental health science | Interview selection is on Total Score. The SJT is not named. | Total Score only |
| Griffith medical science | Uses only Total Score, the three cognitive subtests. UCAT-ANZ is optional. | Not used |
| Monash direct entry | The SJT mark is considered only as a secondary differentiator between applicants with the same total score. | Tie-break |
| Newcastle and New England | The SJT will not form part of selection for admission in 2027. | Not used |
| UNSW medicine | The situational judgement mark will not be considered. | Not used |
| UQ medicine provisional entry | Ranks on the first three sections. Equal scores go to section 4, then section 1. Its how-to-apply page says the calculation is under review. | Tie-break, confirm with UQ |
| UQ medicine direct entry | Interviews are based on the aggregate score. The page does not define it. | Not published |
| UQ dentistry | The aggregate of all four sections is the first selection measure. Equal scores go to section 4, then section 1. | Counted |
| Tasmania medicine | Uses the three cognitive subtests, excluding the SJT. | Not used |
| UWA medicine, dentistry | The overall score excludes the SJT for now. UWA reserves the right to use the SJT score in selection. | Not currently used |
| Western Sydney medicine | The interview threshold is not set on the overall score, and sections may be weighted. Nothing names the SJT. | Not published |
Section 4 is the SJT: Adelaide says so, and it is the fourth subtest in the test format. UQ does not name it. Flinders' Northern Territory pathway through CDU uses the same 90 to 10 rank.
SJT use in Queensland pathways into medicine
These undergraduate degrees lead to a provisional place in a medical program and appear on the Consortium's list.
| Pathway | What the university publishes | In short |
|---|---|---|
| CQUniversity Medical Science, to UQ | Shortlists on the aggregate of the first four sections. That would include the SJT, but UQ and UniSQ say first three for their pathways. | Unclear, ask CQUniversity |
| UniSQ Medical Science, to UQ | First three sections for interview. Section 4 separates equal scores, then section 1. | Tie-break |
| USC Medical Science, to Griffith | Optional. Total Score is used for second-order ranking within an ATAR band. | Total Score only |
SJT use at Auckland and Otago
| School and entry year | What the school publishes | In short |
|---|---|---|
| Auckland MBChB, 2027 entry | The scale scores of all four sections combine into a final score, worth 15% of the final rank. | Counted |
| Auckland MBChB, 2028 entry | Applicants sit the university's situational judgement test, Casper, not UCAT-ANZ. | Casper instead |
| Otago MB ChB, 2027 entry | Situational Judgement at or above the 10th percentile, and Verbal Reasoning at or above the 20th, with a result in all four sections. After that, UCAT scores carry no weight. | Minimum |
Otago publishes a percentile, not a score. For scale, the 10th percentile of all 2026 candidates was 486, but Otago does not say it reads the percentile that way, so treat 486 as a yardstick only.
When your SJT score can change an outcome
For most applicants the cognitive total carries more weight, but the SJT is not always a bystander.
It can change your outcome
- Otago: below the minimum, you do not progress.
- Flinders: it feeds the UCAT-ANZ score that makes up 10% of your rank.
- UQ dentistry: it is one of the four sections in the first selection measure.
- Auckland, 2027 entry: it is part of the final score worth 15%.
It rarely or never will
- UNSW, Newcastle and New England, Curtin and Tasmania: their published rules leave it out.
- Monash and UniSQ: it counts only between equal scores.
- Adelaide: it counts only at the lower ranks, on equal totals.
- UWA: not in the overall score, though the right to use it is reserved.
How to prepare for the UCAT-ANZ SJT
Start with the official material
The Consortium's Question Tutorials, question banks and practice tests are free, and it says the practice tests are representative of the live test.
Practise at test speed
69 questions in 26 minutes is about 23 seconds a question, so work to that pace before test day.
Answer everything
There is no negative marking, and a response close to the correct answer earns partial marks. A blank earns nothing.
Learn why each answer earns its marks
After each set, work out why the correct response is better than the one you chose. Our Situational Judgement guide takes you through the question types.
The UCAT-ANZ SJT is not Casper
Casper is a separate situational judgement test with its own booking. A strong UCAT-ANZ SJT score does not stand in for it.
Curtin asks domestic applicants for both tests. Its interview shortlist weights ATAR, Casper and UCAT-ANZ at 35:35:30, and its UCAT-ANZ score is the cognitive total only. Auckland's final rank for 2028 entry is 50% interview and 50% Casper.
