Melbourne delivers a 4-year graduate Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) taught at Parkville with clinical placement at the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne, distinguished by historic depth (the Australian College of Dentistry, founded 1897), patient treatment from second year, a two-year research project, a final-year rotation that includes a rural placement, and selection on academic ranking alone with no interview.
UoM describes it as "Australia's top-ranked dental school".
What makes Melbourne Dental different
Melbourne's dental school traces to the Australian College of Dentistry, founded 1897 and affiliated with the University in 1904; the graduate 4-year Doctor of Dental Surgery itself dates from the 2011 Melbourne Model.
The school sits at 720 Swanston Street, with pre-clinical simulation, a haptic virtual-reality laboratory and the Melbourne Dental Clinic in MOHTEC at 723 Swanston Street, and clinical placement at the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne plus metropolitan and rural sites; UoM describes it as "Australia's top-ranked dental school".
There is no interview: offers come off one combined ranked list in which rank by GPA/WAM and rank by GAMSAT (or DAT/BMAT) are weighted equally.
Melbourne Dental course & teaching
Integrated curriculum. 4-year (48-month) graduate DDS, listed by UoM as on campus at Parkville.
Year 1 is foundations plus pre-clinical simulation, including a haptic virtual-reality laboratory, at the Melbourne Dental School; students begin treating patients in second year and complete a two-year research project; the final year is almost entirely clinical — a practice clinic connected to the Parkville campus with a broad emergency-care caseload, plus community health centres and rural community clinics including oral health care for the Aboriginal community.
Clinical placement occurs at the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne and other metropolitan and rural sites. Applications run direct to UoM, closing 11.59pm AEST on 31 May for the following year's intake — not via GEMSAS, which publishes a Medical Schools Admission Guide only and no longer hosts a dentistry guide.

How the Melbourne Dental interview runs
Format: Academic ranking only (no MMI / no interview)
Melbourne DDS runs no interview of any kind — no MMI, no panel, no communication-skills screen. Selection is a single combined ranked list in which rank by GPA/WAM and rank by GAMSAT (or, for international applicants residing overseas, DAT/BMAT) are given equal weighting.
The eight-station MMI that circulates under Melbourne's name belongs to the Melbourne Doctor of Medicine — a separate course — where GEMSAS records stations of approximately five minutes with a single assessor, not eight minutes with a reading window.
Melbourne Dental intake
91 places per year — a course-wide quota published in the current (2026) UoM Handbook, last updated 4 August 2026 and still the governing edition for the 2027 intake. This is a quota ceiling, not a published enrolment count, and UoM does NOT publish a CSP / Australian fee place / international split. The quota is capped by the availability of dental chairs at the Royal Dental Hospital Melbourne and the Melbourne Dental Clinic, and Commonwealth Supported Places within it are described only as "limited".

UoM ranks Standard and Indigenous pathway applicants on an entry score its Handbook calls a GPA and its course page now calls a Weighted Average Mark (WAM), computed the same way: the most recent bachelor degree (including Honours) regardless of later graduate study, over the last three undergraduate years, weighted 1 : 2 : 2 from the first of those three years to the final year. Guaranteed pathway applicants are exempt — their whole bachelor-degree WAM is the entry score. 2020 results are treated specially: honours completed in 2020 counts, and subjects completed before the pandemic count, but all other 2020 subject results are excluded. Offers — not interview invitations — are made on a combined ranked list where rank by GPA and rank by GAMSAT (or DAT/BMAT) are given equal weighting; there is no interview component at all. Up to 2 places per year may go to applicants re-ranked on strong cognate postgraduate study. |

There is nothing to rehearse for an interview here — Melbourne DDS has no MMI and no panel, so the whole application is your entry score, your GAMSAT and your prerequisite paperwork. Three things decide most outcomes. First, prerequisites: anatomy, biochemistry and physiology at second-year level taken within 10 years (for the 2027 intake, from 2017 onwards), with an anatomy subject that includes hands-on wet cadaveric lab work. Check the published assessed-subject lists early — MDHS asks you to submit subjects for assessment at least a month before applications OPEN, and there is a hard prerequisite-assessment deadline of 31 May; UoM also warns that solely-online subjects are under review and may not be recognised for the 2027 intake, so a subject that fails review ends the application. Second, entry-score shape: UoM weights your last three undergraduate years 1 : 2 : 2, so a soft first year costs far less than a soft final year, and most 2020 subject results are excluded. Third, if you are still at school, the Graduate Degree Package (ATAR 99.85 into UoM Biomedicine or Science, H1 average, no GAMSAT) is the only secured route in. Applications close 11.59pm AEST on 31 May with no late applications accepted, and deferral is not possible — a successful applicant who cannot start must decline and reapply.
