Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, founded in 2010 through a partnership between Virginia Tech and Carilion Clinic, is one of the newest and smallest MD programs in the US. Course & teaching
PBL curriculum. 4-year MD. A problem-based, team-science curriculum integrates basic and clinical sciences from year one. Small learning teams (~6 students) meet regularly; nearly all instruction is case-based. Research opportunities are integrated through Virginia Tech's research enterprise. Clerkships at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital and affiliated community and rural sites.

Virginia Tech Carilion SOM uses an MMI with multiple timed stations assessing communication, ethical reasoning, and team-based problem-solving. Each station runs approximately eight minutes with prep time; independent assessors score each station. The interview day includes orientation, a tour of the Roanoke Carilion clinical campus, and group activities designed to assess collaborative learning readiness.
