Curtin's Bachelor of Science (Oral Health Therapy) is a 3-year qualification registering graduates as Oral Health Therapists — NOT general dentists (the scope of practice differs from a BDS/DMD). The program serves outer-metropolitan Perth and rural WA public dental workforce needs.
What makes Curtin Oral Health Therapy different
Important: Curtin does not offer a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) or a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD). The only dental-track program at Curtin is the Bachelor of Science (Oral Health Therapy). It is a 3-year qualification, accredited by the Australian Dental Council and the Dental Board of Australia.
It leads to registration as an Oral Health Therapist, which is a separate AHPRA scope from a general dentist. Clinical training runs to over 750 hours, across the Oral Health Centre of WA at Nedlands, community clinics, private practices, and the Dental Health Services clinic at Mt Henry.
Curtin Oral Health Therapy course & teaching
Integrated curriculum. Reaccredited by the Australian Dental Council for five years from 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2030, with no outstanding conditions and Dental Board of Australia status Approved (ADC accredited-programs register; ADC report of an evaluation of Curtin University's Bachelor of Science (Oral Health Therapy), August 2025, updated February 2026).
750+ clinical training hours across Oral Health Centre of Western Australia (Nedlands), community clinics, private dental practices, and the Dental Health Services clinic (Mt Henry). Graduates register as Oral Health Therapists — a separate AHPRA scope from general dentists; the role is restricted in procedural scope compared to a BDS/DMD-trained dentist.
Curtin does NOT offer BDS or DMD; UWA is the only WA university offering a registrable general-dentistry qualification.

Format: Academic results only — ATAR-based selection rank
Curtin's Bachelor of Science (Oral Health Therapy) selects on ATAR / selection rank only. UCAT-ANZ is NOT required. CASPer is NOT used. The program registers graduates as Oral Health Therapists (NOT general dentists) — a distinct AHPRA scope from dentistry. UWA remains the only WA university offering a registrable general-dentistry qualification (DMD).
Curtin Oral Health Therapy intake
32 commencing students in the most recent intake period Curtin publishes (Curtin Undergraduate Student Profile; Curtin does not name the year — the table covers all offer rounds plus international students studying in Australia). Entry basis: 20 (62.50%) admitted on prior higher education study including a bridging or enabling course, 5 (15.63%) solely on ATAR from recent secondary education, 5 (15.63%) on other criteria with ATAR not a factor, and fewer than 5 international. Only part of the intake arrives through TISC: TISC final figures for CUHHS show 22 offers and 9 enrolments for 2026 admission, and 17 offers and 13 enrolments for 2025 admission. The ADC report of August 2025 (updated February 2026) records Curtin intending to increase enrolments to 50 from 2026, subject to evidence of sufficient staffing, facilities, clinical placements and patient access.

Curtin also admits on completed higher education study (Curtin course switcher: 100 credits, a 70% weighted average over the four most recent units and Good Standing; switchers from another provider need a Selection Rank of 80 and can only start in Semester One), an AQF Diploma or Advanced Diploma, STAT (WE plus V or Q), and bridging or enabling courses including UniReady and the Indigenous enabling courses. Fieldwork clearances are compulsory before placement: student declaration, AHPRA registration, criminal record screening, immunisation, first aid, hand hygiene, manual handling and communicable-disease screening, with a Senior First Aid Certificate required before second year, second semester. |

| Indigenous pathway | Curtin course page directs Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants aged 17 or over to Curtin Indigenous enabling courses, run through the Centre for Aboriginal Studies: the six-month Tertiary Enabling Course, the 12-month Indigenous Pre-Medicine and Health Sciences Enabling Course (EN-INPMHE, 1 year full-time, requiring Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent, which Curtin says will prepare you for entry into most Curtin health courses), and the 12-month Pre-Science and Engineering Enabling Course. This entry is Oral Health Therapy, NOT general dentistry. Graduates register as Oral Health Therapists with AHPRA — a restricted scope of practice that does not include the full range of procedures a BDS/DMD-trained dentist can perform. If you want to register as a general dentist in WA, UWA's graduate Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) is the only registrable pathway. The Curtin program is genuinely valuable for public dental workforce service but should not be confused with general dentistry.
