Why train in the UK, and why at a brand-new medical school rather than an established one?

What do you know about Bolton and the communities this school serves?

The school describes Bolton's "rich industrial and multicultural heritage" and diverse patient profiles. Show you understand you would be training in a real Greater Manchester community, not a generic UK city.

Tell us about a time you showed empathy when it was difficult to do so.

Empathy is one of the school's named assessment areas. One concrete story, told plainly, with reflection on what the other person needed from you — not a definition of empathy.

(Possible station) A fellow student in your group project has stopped responding and the deadline is close. Talk to them.

Teamwork is explicitly assessed. Open with concern rather than accusation, find out what is going on, agree a concrete plan — and only escalate once support has failed.

A patient tells you they cannot afford to travel to their follow-up appointments. What issues does this raise?

Health inequality is the daily reality of the communities this school serves. Discuss access barriers, the role of the clinical team in practical problem-solving, and the NHS principle of care free at the point of use — while being realistic about what a student can do.

You will train in the NHS as an international student. What are the NHS's core principles, and which do you find hardest to argue against — or for?

International applicants are still expected to understand the system they will train in: universal coverage, free at the point of use, funded from general taxation. Engage with a real tension — waiting lists, rationing, workforce pressure — rather than reciting the principles.

Describe a time you had to adapt quickly to an unfamiliar culture or environment.

A natural station theme for a largely international cohort moving to Greater Manchester. Concrete example, what you found hard, what you changed, what you kept.

(Possible station) You are shown data comparing emergency-department waiting times across a region. What would you want to know before drawing conclusions?

Problem-solving is a named domain. Interrogate the data before interpreting it: definitions, case mix, population served, seasonality. Structured curiosity scores better than a confident wrong answer.

Medicine will test your resilience. What evidence can you offer that you can remain calm and reassuring under pressure?

The school's person specification asks for students who are "caring, compassionate, resilient and assertive" and can "remain calm and reassuring in stressful situations" — answer with a story that demonstrates exactly that, not adjectives.

How do you learn anatomy best — and what do you make of learning from digital tables alongside cadaveric prosection?

The school teaches anatomy via Anatomage tables and fresh-frozen prosections, and is proud of it. Reflect on your own learning style and the complementary strengths of digital and cadaveric teaching.

Is it acceptable for a new medical school to charge £45,000 a year while it is still completing GMC quality assurance?

A deliberately uncomfortable question worth rehearsing even if it is never asked this directly. Weigh transparency, the compulsory contingency protections for students, and informed choice — and stay non-defensive.

Explain to an elderly patient why a medical student is present in their consultation, and what they can say about it.

Plain language, genuine choice, reassurance about supervision and confidentiality. A classic values-and-communication station that fits the school's clinical-scenario format.

Where do you hope to practise after qualifying, and how does that fit with training in Greater Manchester?

Answer honestly — international graduates have varied plans — but show you understand UK foundation training and what five years embedded in Greater Manchester's NHS will give you wherever you go next.

A patient asks you a question you do not know the answer to, and no senior is immediately available. What do you do?

Safety first: never guess, be honest about your role, commit to finding out, and escalate appropriately. Calm honesty under uncertainty is precisely what the person specification asks for.

What appeals to you about a curriculum with early patient contact from years one and two?

The programme places clinical experiences at partner trusts and GP surgeries from Phase 1. Connect early contact to motivation, communication practice and integrating science with real patients.
