Deakin's 4-year graduate-entry MD trains doctors for regional Victoria with placements anchored at Barwon Health (Geelong) and extending across Warrnambool, Ballarat, and the Western District, distinguished by a year-long Rural Community Clinical School in year 3.
What makes it different
Deakin was established as a rural-focused graduate-entry MD and remains one of the strongest pipelines into Victorian rural practice. The program partners closely with the Rural Workforce Agency Victoria and GP Education programs. A substantial proportion of places are reserved for rural-origin applicants, with bonded service options. Year 3 includes the distinctive Rural Community Clinical School experience.
Course & teaching
PBL curriculum. 4-year graduate MD with problem-based learning. Years 1-2 foundations and clinical skills at Waurn Ponds. Interview
Deakin interviews via Multi-Mini Interview (~8 stations). Deakin MMI runs around 8 stations of 8 minutes each, delivered at the Waurn Ponds (Geelong) campus or virtually depending on cycle. Stations span ethical scenarios, communication, motivation for rural/regional medicine, teamwork, and structured reflection. Examiners are clinicians and academics from the Barwon Health network; the rubric explicitly probes commitment to rural and regional Victoria.
