What to expect at a Deakin interview

Deakin MMI runs around 8 stations of 8 minutes each, delivered at the Waurn Ponds (Geelong) campus or virtually depending on cycle. Stations span ethical scenarios, communication, motivation for rural/regional medicine, teamwork, and structured reflection. Examiners are clinicians and academics from the Barwon Health network; the rubric explicitly probes commitment to rural and regional Victoria.

What makes Deakin different

Deakin was established as a rural-focused graduate-entry MD and remains one of the strongest pipelines into Victorian rural practice. The program partners closely with the Rural Workforce Agency Victoria and GP Education programs. A substantial proportion of places are reserved for rural-origin applicants, with bonded service options. Year 3 includes the distinctive Rural Community Clinical School experience.

Tutor insight

Deakin's year-long Rural Community Clinical School is the genuinely distinctive feature — examiners want to see you understand what continuity-of-care training in a single rural town actually entails, day-to-day. Avoid generic "I love regional medicine" answers. Bring specific examples: a placement in a small community, an understanding of GP-led generalism, or family ties to regional Victoria. Be ready to discuss why graduate-entry suits you and why Deakin's rural mission specifically.
