Read every ATAR figure as a selection rank, not a raw score. Educational access bonuses, rural-origin uplift and Indigenous pathways all adjust it, so the published number is rarely the one that decides your application.

Both JCU and UNSW use Panel interviews, so the underlying prep approach is the same — practise ethics frameworks, Australian health-system topics (Medicare, rural workforce, Indigenous health) and (for MMI) structured station responses against a timer.

That said, the specifics differ slightly: JCU runs live online panel interview run on the kira talent platform (not a recorded one-way video task); UNSW runs structured interview with two interviewers (not an mmi). Mock practice tailored to each school's exact format is the highest-leverage prep.

Interview windows: JCU interviews in 2027 entry (current cycle): round 1 invites 6 November 2026, interviews 24 November - 1 December 2026; round 2 invites 21 December 2026, interviews 6-7 January 2027. Both rounds occur before any offers are determined.

A larger cohort means more peer breadth; a smaller cohort means more tutor contact.

JCU: JCU does not publish an interview-to-offer conversion rate for Medicine. UNSW: Not published by UNSW. For scale only: UNSW offers approximately 350 General Entry interview places a year, plus about 60 Gateway and 30 Lateral, against the domestic commencing quota of 198 recorded by the AMC in 2024 - shared across all entry schemes.

Post-interview odds give you the clearest signal of how competitive each school is at the final stage — a school with a 60% post-interview success rate is structurally easier to convert than one at 25%, even if the interview thresholds look identical on paper.

JCU: JCU requires neither UCAT-ANZ nor GAMSAT and states that sitting either confers no advantage — unusual in Australia, though not unique: Bond University also requires neither, substituting its own online psychometric test. JCU substitutes no admission test at all. There is no written application for JCU Medicine: selection weighs academic performance, a live online panel interview, and rurality.

Rural origin and connection to northern Queensland are considered, but JCU states there is no fixed quota for regional versus metropolitan applicants, that school type is not considered, and that regional connection 'does not outweigh overall merit'.

Bonded places come through the federal Bonded Medical Program, under which universities must allocate 28.5% of commencing Commonwealth Supported Places in medicine (Department of Health conditions document, December 2025); a small number of further places are reserved under the QTAC Rural Access Scheme.

MRBS (Medical Rural Bonded Scholarship) is a closed legacy scheme — replaced nationally by BMP from 2020 — so the "100% MRBS bonded" framing some guides use is inaccurate. The program runs 6 years (MBBS) with one of the longest continuous rural and tropical placement footprints in Australia.

UNSW: UNSW runs a 6-year direct-entry Bachelor of Medical Studies / Doctor of Medicine (BMed MD): two foundation years, a clinical third year, a dedicated research fourth year (Independent Learning Project or Medicine Honours) and two final clinical years.

Four schemes sit alongside general entry - the Rural Entry Admission Pathway (ATAR 91.00, UCAT ANZ 40th percentile, end-to-end study at Port Macquarie or Wagga Wagga), the Gateway Entry Scheme for low-SES applicants (~20 offers), the Lateral Entry Scheme from the UNSW BMedSc (up to 10 offers) and the Indigenous Entry Scheme via Nura Gili.
