JCU vs UQ

JCU and UQ are both Australian medical schools, but the path to an offer at each is meaningfully different. Both sit in Queensland, so the state bonus schemes and clinical-placement networks broadly overlap — the differentiation comes from selection, interview and curriculum. JCU uses no national admission test; UQ uses GAMSAT.

That mismatch means either preparing two assessments or choosing the school whose test suits you. They also recruit at different stages: JCU runs school-leaver (undergraduate) entry, UQ runs graduate entry. Timing shapes the choice as much as the score. GAMSAT is graduate-only and sits in March and September; UCAT-ANZ is mostly undergraduate and sits in July. A few schools run their own selection model with no national test at all.

JCU requires Year 12 ATAR (2024 floor 89.4; Cairns median 97.95, Townsville 97.60) with English + Maths Methods + Chemistry (Units 3/4, C; Physics/Biology desirable). Non-Year-12 GPA floor 5.75. UQ requires Bachelor degree with minimum GPA 5.0/7.0; GAMSAT overall 50+ with section minima 50+; MMI.

Read every ATAR figure as a selection rank, not a raw score. Educational access bonuses, rural-origin uplift and Indigenous pathways all adjust it, so the published number is rarely the one that decides your application.

Interview formats

JCU uses Assessment day (Kira Talent one-way recorded interview (online, ~30-60 min)); UQ uses MMI (Multi-Mini Interview (8 stations)). These two formats reward different skills — Assessment day emphasises academic reasoning and thinking aloud through unfamiliar problems, while MMI rewards breadth and quick recovery.

If your strengths lie in conversational depth, either may suit you more. If you prefer discrete capsule answers under time pressure, UQ is the better fit.

Interview windows: JCU interviews in November-January (Kira Talent windows: 25 Nov-2 Dec 2025, plus 2 & 5 Jan 2026 for 2026 entry); UQ in October-November.

Curriculum and teaching style

Both schools deliver a Integrated-style curriculum, so day-to-day study habits will feel similar across years 1-3.

Specifics: 6-year undergraduate MBBS (BMBS). Years 1-2 foundations at Townsville (Douglas) campus. Years 3-4 clinical introductions and rural/remote placements. 4-year graduate MD. Post-interview odds give you the clearest signal of how competitive each school is at the final stage — a school with a 60% post-interview success rate is structurally easier to convert than one at 25%, even if the interview thresholds look identical on paper.

What makes each distinctive

JCU: JCU is the only Australian medical school with no UCAT/GAMSAT requirement — the written application (3 set questions, due 30 Sep) carries enormous weight, and rural origin, Indigenous identity, and tropical/Pacific health commitment are core selection criteria. JCU uses the federal Bonded Medical Program (BMP) + Rural Access Scheme for ~80% of CSP intake.

MRBS (Medical Rural Bonded Scholarship) is a closed legacy scheme — replaced nationally by BMP from 2020 — so the "100% MRBS bonded" framing some guides use is inaccurate. The program runs 6 years (MBBS) with one of the longest continuous rural and tropical placement footprints in Australia.

UQ: UQ runs Australia's largest 4-year graduate-entry MD (~470 places), anchored across the Herston Health Sciences precinct and the Princess Alexandra, Royal Brisbane, Mater, and Gold Coast clinical schools. The Ochsner Clinical School in New Orleans offers an internationally co-badged pathway.

Pre-interview ranking is a weighted GAMSAT + GPA composite; the MMI and MSA together carry significant weight in the final offer composite.

Which is right for you?

Start with the admission test: JCU needs no national admission test, UQ needs GAMSAT. Preparing for one well beats splitting your time across two. Both sit in Queensland, so a local applicant gets the same state bonus at each. They suit different stages too: JCU is school-leaver (undergraduate) entry, UQ is graduate entry.

Your preference list should ultimately weight: which admission test you can realistically score well in, whether your state of origin gives you a bonus at either school, and where you'd actually want to live for four to six years.

Common questions

JCU uses no admission test. UQ uses GAMSAT. The test mismatch means you may need to prep two assessments simultaneously, or you can pick the school whose admission test you're stronger in. GAMSAT is graduate-only and sat in March/September; UCAT-ANZ is undergraduate-leaning and sat in July; some schools (notably Bond and JCU) run their own selection model with no national test.
