UQ Dental does not interview applicants. There is no MMI, no panel, no CASPer and no portfolio assessment. The 5-year Bachelor of Dental Science (Honours) at the Oral Health Centre Herston runs one of the most competitive ATAR + UCAT-ANZ selection models in Australia, and offers are made directly from the combined ranking without any non-academic step.
Selection is two-step. Step 1: applicants must meet an adjusted ATAR of 99.00 (post-adjustment factors). Step 2: all qualifying applicants are ranked on their UCAT-ANZ aggregate, and offers are made in UCAT-ranked order until the cohort fills.
For 2026 entry, the disclosed offer-ATAR distribution (post-adjustment) was 99.00 lowest / 99.95 median / 99.95 highest, with the unadjusted distribution 95.70 lowest / 99.30 median / 99.95 highest. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Admissions Scheme exempts applicants from the UCAT-ANZ requirement and uses bespoke selection. Because there is no interview, this guide focuses on ATAR strategy and UCAT-ANZ preparation rather than scenario rehearsal.

Interview format
- UQ Dental has no MMI, no panel interview, no CASPer and no portfolio assessment. Selection is purely academic.
- Step 1: applicants must hit an **adjusted ATAR of 99.00** (after QTAC adjustment factors such as Educational Access Scheme, rural / regional, subject bonuses).
- Step 2: all qualifying applicants are then ranked by **UCAT-ANZ aggregate**, and offers flow in UCAT order until the cohort fills.
- 2025 cohort: ~75 admitted (~60% international); domestic offers are highly concentrated near the top of the UCAT distribution.
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Admissions Scheme: UCAT-ANZ is waived; selection uses bespoke criteria with academic and cultural support.
- Adjustment factors and the ATAR / UCAT-ANZ rules are reviewed each cycle — verify against the UQ Dentistry admissions page before applying.
Sample interview questions
(Self-clarification for UCAT prep and any school you interview at) Why dentistry, and why not medicine? Be specific.
Even though UQ Dent does not interview, a defensible answer protects you for any other dental school that does (Charles Sturt Dent, Adelaide Dent, Griffith's GUDAP, UWA Dent if you also apply). Engage with what attracts you to dental practice specifically. Do not frame dentistry as a medicine backup.
Why UQ Dental? What attracts you to the Oral Health Centre Herston?
Engage with Queensland's largest dental teaching facility, the hospital-integrated model, and the case-mix breadth. Useful self-clarification before committing UCAT effort to UQ.
Tell us about your manual dexterity. How do you know dentistry will suit you?
Concrete: fine motor hobbies, model-making, music, prior procedural exposure. Standard dental MMI staple at other schools.
(Transferable dental MMI prep) A patient at a dental clinic wants veneers on healthy teeth purely for cosmetic reasons. Walk through your response.
Autonomy AND non-maleficence. Discuss consent, alternatives, AHPRA Dental Board guidance.
Closing the Gap targets continue to lag for Aboriginal oral health in Queensland. What role can a UQ Dental graduate play?
Concrete: ACCHO-affiliated dental services (Apunipima, Wuchopperen), cultural safety, workforce closing the gap. Useful background for an Indigenous-pathway application or any other dental MMI.
Role-play: a patient is anxious about a drill procedure. Demonstrate the conversation.
Validate fear. Tell-show-do. Hand-signals. Patience. Transfers cleanly to Griffith GUDAP, Charles Sturt Dent, Adelaide Dent MMIs.
Explain Medicare's Child Dental Benefits Schedule to a parent in regional Queensland.
Plain language. Concrete dollar example. Eligibility.
Voluntary assisted dying is legal in Queensland. How might VAD interact with dental practice?
Dental practitioners may be drawn into VAD conversations (oral cancer patients). Engage with referral obligations.
You have a very high ATAR and strong UCAT. What attracts you specifically to dentistry rather than medicine or another high-entry program?
UQ Dent's offer cohort is dominated by candidates who could have entered medicine. Concrete, honest engagement with dental craft and career — useful for any dental interview elsewhere.
A patient with severe periodontal disease asks why no previous dentist warned them. What do you say?
Duty of candour. Do not blame without evidence; do not minimise. Current plan focus.
How would you communicate with a patient whose first language is not English?
Plain language, interpreter use, family involvement where appropriate.
Should dental treatment be Medicare-funded for adults the way medical care is?
Engage with the funding model, equity arguments, the current CDBS-private patchwork. Balanced.
What concerns you most about a career in dentistry?
Honest: physical demands, patient anxiety, business pressures, the Australian dental workforce model.
Role-play: explain to a parent why their child's baby tooth decay matters.
Plain language. Practical actions. Validate parental concern.
Describe a time you reflected on critical feedback.
Authentic reflection.
What does the Oral Health Centre Herston bring as a teaching environment that other dental schools don't?
Engage with case-mix complexity, specialist exposure, multidisciplinary teams.
A teammate makes a culturally insensitive comment. Address it.
Specific behaviour. Private conversation first. Escalation if needed.
