GCSE requirements for medicine and dentistry

There is no single GCSE requirement for medicine or dentistry in the UK. Each school sets its own rule: 40 of the 44 medicine courses for school leavers in our tables state a GCSE minimum, usually built around English, Maths and science, and 15 medicine and 2 dentistry courses go further, turning your grades into points that count towards the interview shortlist or set a minimum score.

  • 44 medicine and 14 dentistry courses for school leavers
  • 9 to 1 in England · A* to G in Wales and Northern Ireland
  • National 5 in Scotland

The short answer

What GCSEs do you need for medicine or dentistry?

Minimums

Of the 40 medicine courses whose GCSE minimum is in our tables, all 40 mention English, 37 Maths and 31 at least one science. Grades differ: Bristol wants 7 in Maths but 4 in English; Birmingham's dental school wants 8 in Biology and Chemistry (or dual award science).

Points

15 medicine and 2 dentistry courses in our tables score GCSEs as points. At Birmingham's medical school, GCSEs are 45% of the score that ranks home applicants for interview. At 19 medicine and 5 dentistry courses, GCSEs are a minimum only.

Lower grades

Some schools stop looking at GCSEs once you pass the minimum, some compare your grades with your school's results, and some look at your achieved A-levels instead if you apply after Year 13.

Rules change between application cycles. Use this guide to plan, then confirm each school's current requirement on its own admissions page before you choose GCSEs, book a resit or apply.

The grading scales

How GCSE grades work across the UK

In England, GCSEs have been graded 9 to 1 since 2017, and 9 is the highest grade. Ofqual, the exams regulator, says the number scale is not directly equivalent to the old A* to G letters, but it fixed three anchor points: the bottom of a grade 7 is comparable to the bottom of an old A, the bottom of a 4 to the bottom of an old C, and the bottom of a 1 to the bottom of an old G. The Department for Education calls grade 4 a "standard pass" and tells universities that the nearest equivalent to an old grade C requirement is a 4.

You will see requirements written as "6/B" or "7/A" throughout the tables below: the number grade and the letter grade side by side.

Wales and Northern Ireland use different scales. GCSEs designed for Wales are graded A* to G, and Qualifications Wales has confirmed that the new Made-for-Wales GCSEs, the first of which are due to be awarded in 2027, keep that scale. Because the Welsh and English scales don't directly align, Qualifications Wales says that combined results for the two are published only at the key grades A/7, C/4 and G/1. In Northern Ireland, CCEA GCSEs use nine letter grades from A* to G, including a C*.

Scottish qualifications work differently again. If you are taking them, look for the National 5 line in each school's requirements; Qualifications Scotland, which replaced the SQA, grades National 5 courses A to D. Glasgow's medicine page asks applicants with Scottish qualifications for National 5 English at grade B where it asks A-level applicants for GCSE English at 6/B, and Aberdeen asks for National 5 English and Maths at B or above.

Combined science is awarded as two equal or adjacent grades, such as 9-9, 9-8 or 8-8, down to 1-1, and counts as two GCSEs when you apply to university. You study biology, chemistry and physics, but not as much content as students taking the separate sciences.

How GCSE grades line up at the points the exam regulators publish (Ofqual, Department for Education, CCEA)
England (9 to 1)Northern Ireland (CCEA)What the regulators say
Grade 9A*The highest GCSE grade in England. CCEA aligns A* with 9.
Grade 8ACCEA's grade A covers 8 and 7.
Grade 7AThe bottom of a 7 is comparable to the bottom of an old A (Ofqual).
Grade 6BCCEA aligns B with 6.
Grade 5C*CCEA's C* aligns with 5.
Grade 4CThe bottom of a 4 is comparable to the bottom of an old C (Ofqual). The Department for Education calls grade 4 a 'standard pass'.

Welsh A* to G grades are not shown against every number grade: the Welsh and English scales don't directly align, and combined results for the two are published only at A/7, C/4 and G/1.

Minimums, points and context

How medical and dental schools use your GCSEs

We have sorted every course in the tables below into four groups by how its GCSE rule is worded: in the school's own words where they differed from our profile when we checked on 7 October 2026, otherwise in our school profile. These are the totals for courses that take school leavers.

  • Scored as points

    15 medicine2 dentistry

Your grades are converted into points. Depending on the school, the points rank you for interview or set a minimum score you must reach.

  • Minimum only

    19 medicine5 dentistry

You must meet the minimum. After that, other measures, most often UCAT, decide who is interviewed.

  • Weighed, no points published

    3 medicine5 dentistry

GCSEs count alongside other parts of your application, or are read against your school's results, but no points system is published.

  • Use not recorded

    7 medicine2 dentistry

Our tables give the minimum, where there is one, but not how GCSEs are used after that.

Points systems: five published examples

Where GCSEs are scored, the detail matters: which subjects count, how many, and what each grade is worth. These five medical schools publish the points each GCSE grade earns.

How five UK medical schools score GCSEs, from each school's own admissions page (checked 7 October 2026)
SchoolGCSEs countedPoints per gradeHow the score is used
Birmingham (medicine)Seven: English Language, English Literature, Maths, Biology and Chemistry (or dual award science), plus two of your choiceNamed subjects: 8–9/A* = 4, 7/A = 2, 6/B = 1 (each needs at least 6/B). Free choices: 2 points only at 8–9/A*Scaled to a maximum of 4.5 in an application score out of 10 (45% academic, 40% UCAT, 15% contextual) that ranks home applicants for interview
Cardiff (medicine)Eight, including Biology, Chemistry (or double science), English Language and Maths9/8/A* = 3, 7/A = 2, 6/B = 1, on achieved grades onlyCombined with UCAT decile points; a UCAT cut-off may be added if too many applicants reach the top academic scores
Newcastle (medicine)Your best eight achieved GCSEs (short courses are not scored)9/A* = 5, 8 = 4, 7/A = 3, 6/B = 1, 5/C = 0, up to 40 in totalHome applicants only: combined with up to 60 UCAT points, and the top-scoring applicants are interviewed. If you have completed A-levels, your best three A-level grades are scored instead
Queen's University Belfast (medicine)Your best nineA*/9 = 4, A/7–8 = 3, B/6 = 2, C*/C/4–5 = 1Added to up to 9 UCAT points (by centile) to rank for interview. Short courses score half points. Only GCSEs completed in Years 10 and 11 count for students in England and Wales
Liverpool (medicine)Your best nine (nine GCSEs needed by the end of Year 11)9/8/7 or A*/A = 2, 6/B = 1A minimum score of 15 points is required

Minimum only: pass the gate, then other measures decide

At these schools GCSEs are a gate. Imperial says there are no GCSE requirements for its MBBS beyond English, where it asks for grade 6 in GCSE English Language, and that it invites applicants to interview on the basis of predicted grades and UCAT scores. Bristol asks for grade 7 in Maths and grade 4 in English (applicants whose first language is not English must also meet a separate English language requirement). Its 2027 admissions statement says it does not weight A-levels or GCSEs: applicants who meet the minimum are scored with a 100% weighting on UCAT to select for interview. Manchester screens every application against its academic threshold, which includes at least seven GCSEs at grade 7 or above, and applications that don't meet it go no further.

A minimum is not a target. Sheffield asks for five GCSEs at grade 7 plus grade 6 in Maths, English Language and a science, but its course page adds that candidates selected for interview usually far exceed the minimum requirements.

In context: your grades against your school's

In 2025, Oxford's first shortlisting stage combined a GCSE score with UCAT and, where school performance data were available, used them to judge whether an applicant's GCSEs were above or below what their school typically achieves. Cambridge produces an "adjusted GCSE score" for each applicant, most often a count of A*/8/9 grades, and also counts 7/A grades, on a sliding scale, for pupils from schools whose average GCSE results fall below a set level. (Cambridge notes that its school GCSE data covers schools in England only.) Kent and Medway compares the GCSE and A-level results of applicants from schools in England with their school's average, and uses that relative attainment for shortlisting instead of absolute grades.

Some schools that score GCSEs add context on top. Leeds allocates extra shortlisting points if you meet one of its contextual criteria, which include attending a school with a below-average Attainment 8 score at GCSE. Leicester counts the same kind of school as a contextual marker, and an applicant with two or more markers may be favoured over one with the same score and fewer.

Dental schools: the same patterns

King's College London ranks dentistry applications on GCSE performance, UCAT score and contextual information. Birmingham's dental school checks its academic criteria first, including grade 8/A* in Biology and Chemistry (or dual award science), and then uses the total UCAT score in shortlisting for interview. Plymouth's dental school asks for seven GCSEs at grade 4/C or above, including English Language, Maths and two sciences. The dentistry table below shows each school's rule.

English, Maths and science

Which GCSE subjects and grades do schools ask for?

Counting the wording of each rule in our tables: of the 40 medicine courses that state a GCSE minimum, all 40 mention English, 37 mention Maths and 31 mention at least one science. For dentistry it is 13, 12 and 9 of 13.

Check which English. Manchester will not accept English Literature in place of English Language. Glasgow's medical school accepts either at grade 6/B, and Birmingham's dental school asks for Language or Literature at grade 7/A.

Maths minimums differ. Newcastle's dental school asks for grade 4/C, the medical schools at Leeds and UCL for 6/B, and Bristol's medical school for 7/A.

Some schools count top grades. Rather than naming every subject, they ask for a number of high grades: at least seven GCSEs at grade 7 or above at Manchester, five at Sheffield and Sunderland, and six at the dental schools in Glasgow and Sheffield.

Have the grades in hand. Leeds says all Level 2 qualifications must be achieved by the time you apply, and Sheffield that its GCSE requirements should be met by the point of application.

Years 9 to 11

Choosing your GCSEs in Year 9: combined or triple science?

English, maths and science are core subjects in England's national curriculum at key stage 4 (Years 10 and 11), so the real choices for a future doctor or dentist are how you take science and what you add around it.

Combined or separate sciences?

Combined science (also called double award) gives you two GCSE grades; triple science means separate GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. On their own admissions pages, Birmingham (medicine and dentistry), Cardiff (medicine and dentistry), Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Sheffield (medicine and dentistry), Southampton, Aston, Kent and Medway, Queen's University Belfast and Plymouth's dental school all name combined or double award science as meeting their science requirement, sometimes at a set grade: Manchester asks for at least 6-6 and Cardiff's medical school for 7-7.

Watch out for named sciences. Sunderland asks for grade 6 in Biology, Chemistry and Physics and lists no combined science alternative. Keele also asks for Physics: it accepts combined science at 6-6, but not Biology and Chemistry without Physics. Kent and Medway asks for Physics alongside Biology and Chemistry (or double science plus one other GCSE), and says applicants with only two separate sciences need an extenuating circumstances application. St Andrews does not accept dual award or combined science in place of GCSE Biology.

If you have the choice

Triple science covers the subjects named in every science rule quoted in this guide. If your school offers only combined science, it is accepted by name at the schools listed above; check any school that names separate sciences before you apply.

How many GCSEs, and when

At points-scoring schools only a set number of GCSEs count: seven at Birmingham's medical school, eight at Cardiff's, your best eight at Newcastle and Leeds, and your best nine at Liverpool and Queen's University Belfast. Oxford's 2025 shortlisting measure looked at the number of GCSEs taken, the number at A*/9/8 and the proportion at those grades.

Don't take too few, either. Liverpool asks for nine GCSEs attained by the end of Year 11, Cardiff for at least eight, and in 2025 Oxford used a GCSE score only for applicants who had sat more than five.

  • English Literature can count

Birmingham's medical school scores English Literature as one of five named subjects, each needing at least grade 6, and says it will not exempt anyone from a score in every named subject.

  • Timing can matter

For scoring, Queen's University Belfast only counts GCSEs completed in Years 10 and 11 (for students in England and Wales). Sheffield wants each relevant GCSE studied for no longer than two years.

  • Short courses may not count

Sheffield and Manchester do not accept GCSE short courses towards their requirements and Newcastle does not score them, while Queen's University Belfast scores them at half the points of a full GCSE.

  • Level 2 swaps are limited

Manchester accepts one Level 2 BTEC (at distinction or above) in place of one GCSE. Liverpool counts no more than two Level 2 BTEC or OCR awards among its nine, never in place of English Language, Maths or science.

Resitting a GCSE

GCSE resits: do they count?

Resit rules differ from school to school. Here is what 15 schools' own pages said when this guide was checked.

GCSE resit rules at 15 UK schools, from each school's own page (checked 7 October 2026)
SchoolWhat the school says about GCSE resits
Cardiff (medicine)Accepted if taken within a year of the original exam. English Language can be resat at any time.
Leeds (medicine)From 2026 entry, one resit attempt per GCSE is accepted without mitigating circumstances. A third attempt needs evidence of mitigating circumstances.
Sheffield (medicine)Accepted: one resit per GCSE, and all resits must be taken in the same sitting. Only GCSEs that miss the requirements need to be retaken.
North Wales (medicine)Accepted if completed within 12 months of the original sitting and before you apply, with one resit per qualification. English Language or Welsh First Language has no time limit.
Manchester (medicine)Permitted. List any GCSE you are resitting as a pending qualification on your UCAS application. Manchester uses your most recent result, even if it is lower than your first attempt.
Sunderland (medicine)Accepted if the grade is gained before you apply, with up to two resit attempts per subject.
Kent and Medway (medicine)Accepted towards the minimum requirements if completed, with final results, before you apply.
Newcastle (medicine)If you have resat a GCSE, the most recent grade is the one that is scored.
Glasgow (medicine)GCSE and National 5 resits are allowed, and resitting a GCSE will not affect your eligibility. The A-level or Higher grades in the offer must be achieved at one sitting and at the first attempt.
UCL (medicine)You may resit GCSEs to meet the GCSE requirement (English Language and Maths at 6/B). UCL does not accept A-level resits.
Nottingham (medicine)No more than one GCSE resit is considered, in Maths, English Language, Biology, Human Biology, Chemistry or Double Science.
Leicester (medicine)Resits in GCSE English Language or Maths are considered from any applicant; resits in other subjects only with very significant mitigating circumstances agreed in writing beforehand. Pending GCSE results are not accepted, and only first sittings are scored.
Lancaster (medicine)Not considered unless exceptional circumstances are clearly evidenced at the time of application.
Edinburgh (medicine)Not accepted: all examination grades must be obtained at the first attempt of each subject.
Birmingham (dentistry)Not considered, except under its extenuating circumstances policy.

A resit can also change how your grades are scored. Newcastle scores the most recent grade, and Manchester uses your most recent result even if it is lower. Leicester scores first sittings only, and Queen's University Belfast counts only GCSEs completed in Years 10 and 11 for scoring (for students in England and Wales), so check how it would treat a later resit. Before you book one, check how each school on your list treats it: a resit that clears one school's minimum may not be accepted, or scored, at another.

Plan B is still a plan

What if your GCSEs are lower than you'd like?

Lower GCSEs change which schools make sense for you. Five ways to work with them:

  1. Apply where GCSEs are a gate, not a ranking

Filter the tables below to Minimum only schools. Once you clear the minimum there, other measures decide: Bristol and Sheffield, for example, rank applicants on UCAT. See what a good UCAT score is.

  2. Look for schools that read grades in context

Oxford, Cambridge and Kent and Medway compare your GCSEs with your school's results, and Leeds adds contextual points. Our contextual offers guide explains the flags.

  3. Report genuine extenuating circumstances

Oxford reviews applicants who miss its automatic shortlist and asks for circumstances that affected GCSEs to be reported through its dedicated process. Its examples include a school limit on how many GCSEs you could take, starting to learn English only a few years before your exams, or illness during much of Year 10.

  4. Consider applying after your A-levels

Some schools look at your most recent qualifications. Newcastle scores the best three achieved A-level grades of home applicants who have already completed A-levels, instead of their GCSEs. If you apply with your A-levels achieved, Birmingham's dental school looks at your A-level results rather than your GCSE profile (it still requires grade 4 in English and Maths).

  5. Be realistic about the most GCSE-heavy schools

Oxford's GCSE FAQ says that in the most recent round no applicant with fewer than four GCSEs at grade 8 or 9 was shortlisted, and none with fewer than seven received an offer. If you later take a degree, graduate-entry courses open up. The schools in our tables that take only graduates are listed at the end of each table below; others, such as King's College London and Sheffield, run a graduate-entry course alongside their five-year course. Our graduate-entry medicine guide covers the route.
