Which A-levels do you need for medicine and dentistry?
Chemistry is compulsory at 22 of the 41 UK school-leaver medicine courses open to UK applicants, and Biology at 15 — but every one of the 41 asks for at least one of the two. Dentistry leans harder on both: 10 of the 16 UK dental schools with a school-leaver course make Chemistry and Biology compulsory. Standard offers run from ABB to A*A*A, with AAA the most common. Taking Chemistry and Biology together meets the science rule at 40 of the 41 medicine courses and all 16 dental schools.

The subject rule
Which sciences do medical and dental schools ask for?
Every medical and dental school writes its own A-level subject rule, and they differ more than you might expect. We sorted each school’s rule into one of four patterns. Across the 41 UK school-leaver medicine courses open to UK applicants:
Both are compulsory.
Aston University, Cardiff, Edge Hill, Exeter, Hull York (HYMS), Imperial College London, King's College London (KCL), Leeds, Nottingham, St George's and UCL
Chemistry is compulsory; Biology is one option for the partner subject.
Aberdeen, Birmingham, Bristol, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool, Oxford, Queen's University Belfast (QUB), St Andrews and University of Central Lancashire (UCLan)
Biology is compulsory; Chemistry is optional or not needed.
Lincoln Medical School, North Wales (Bangor), Peninsula (Plymouth) and Southampton
Either one will do; read the rule for the partner subject.
Anglia Ruskin (ARU), Barts and The London (Queen Mary), Brighton & Sussex (BSMS), Brunel Medical School, Buckingham, Dundee, Keele, Kent and Medway (KMMS), Lancaster, Leicester, Manchester, Newcastle, Norwich (UEA), Sheffield and Sunderland
So Chemistry is the subject medical schools ask for most often, but ‘you must take Chemistry for medicine’ is not true everywhere: 19 of the 41 courses do not make it compulsory. Lincoln, for example, asks for AAA ‘which must include Biology (or Human Biology)’ and names no other required subject. Manchester asks for Biology/Human Biology or Chemistry, plus one of Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Psychology, Maths or Further Maths.
At the other end, Oxford requires Chemistry plus at least one of Biology, Physics or Maths, and Cambridge requires Chemistry at every college, plus one or two further science or maths subjects depending on the college. Biology is compulsory at 15 of the 41 medicine courses, so it is worth taking too if you can.
Dentistry
Dental schools lean harder on both sciences. 10 of the 16 UK dental schools with a school-leaver course open to UK applicants make Chemistry and Biology compulsory. The other six: Bristol (Chemistry compulsory, Biology optional), King's College London (KCL) (Chemistry or Biology), Norwich (UEA) (Chemistry or Biology), Plymouth (Biology compulsory, Chemistry optional), Portsmouth (Biology compulsory, Chemistry optional) and Queen Mary (QMUL) (Chemistry or Biology). Plymouth, for instance, asks for grade A in Biology and in a second science from Chemistry, Physics, Maths or Psychology. Norwich (UEA) and Portsmouth are new dental schools, with a first UK intake in September 2027. They are not in our school records yet, so their rows quote their own course pages. Our Where to Apply for Dentistry page covers what else they ask for.
Your third A-level
What should your third A-level be?
Once the science rule is met, the schools we checked leave the third subject largely to you. Oxford says its tutors ‘will never specify the third A-level to be included in the offer’ beyond excluding Critical Thinking and General Studies, and that applicants who take an arts or social science subject are as welcome as those who take only sciences and maths. Manchester has ‘no preference for the third subject’ and says ‘a combination of three sciences is equally acceptable’. Plymouth’s dental school says your third A-level ‘does not need to be science based’ and that it gives no preference to three sciences when shortlisting.
So pick the subject you will get your best grade in and will enjoy for two years. Oxford’s own advice is to ‘choose the subjects that most interest you and in which you expect to do best’.
Subjects that may not count
- General Studies and Critical Thinking are excluded by Oxford, Imperial, King’s College London, Hull York, Lincoln and Aston. Plymouth’s dental school excludes General Studies.
- King’s College London also excludes Thinking Skills and Global Perspectives.
- Hull York also excludes Applied Science and Citizenship.
- Lincoln also excludes Global Perspectives and Citizenship Studies, and its 2027–28 A-level offer does not accept the EPQ.
Avoid pairs that overlap
Two A-levels that cover much of the same ground may not both count towards an offer. Hull York does not treat Biology and Human Biology as distinct subjects, and Manchester’s offers will not include Biology and Human Biology together, or Maths and Further Maths together.
Psychology
At some schools Psychology can be more than a third subject: it counts as the partner for Chemistry or Biology. Eight of the medicine courses above name Psychology in their subject rule (Anglia Ruskin (ARU), Keele, Kent and Medway (KMMS), Lancaster, Leicester, Manchester, Peninsula (Plymouth) and Southampton), and so do three dental schools (King's College London (KCL), Plymouth and Portsmouth).
Maths, Physics and Further Maths
Do you need Maths, Physics or Further Maths?
In the rules we checked, Maths and Physics appear as options alongside Chemistry or Biology rather than as compulsory subjects on their own. Oxford accepts Chemistry plus Biology, Physics or Maths. Glasgow asks UK A-level applicants for Chemistry plus one of Biology, Physics or Mathematics (and international A-level applicants for Chemistry, Biology and one of Physics or Mathematics). Newcastle’s 2027 policy lists Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Statistics or Physics as the second subject.
Cambridge is the one to plan for
Cambridge requires Chemistry at every college, plus one or two other science or maths subjects from Biology (or Human Biology), Physics, Maths and Further Maths. Seven colleges (Fitzwilliam, Girton, Homerton, Murray Edwards, Newnham, Selwyn and Trinity Hall) ask for Chemistry and one other; the other 21 colleges it lists ask for Chemistry and two others. Cambridge also says all of its A-level medicine entrants had studied Chemistry and almost all had studied at least two of Biology, Further Maths, Maths and Physics. If Cambridge is on your list, taking Chemistry plus two of Biology, Physics, Maths and Further Maths keeps every college open.
Further Maths
Schools treat Further Maths differently. Oxford counts Maths and Further Maths as two separate A-levels. Manchester will not include Maths and Further Maths together in an offer. King’s College London dentistry says that if Maths is used to meet one of its subject requirements, Further Maths cannot be your third A-level. If you are planning Chemistry, Maths and Further Maths, check every school on your list.
Four A-levels and the EPQ
Should you take four A-levels or an EPQ?
The schools quoted here make their standard offers on three A-levels. Oxford’s typical offer is A*AA and it says ‘quality rather than quantity is what tutors will be looking for’; it also recognises that some schools limit how many subjects students can take. Manchester says that if you take more than three A-levels ‘these won’t be included in your offer’. Aston considers Chemistry, Biology and your next-best grade if you take more than three.
So take a fourth A-level only if you want to study it and it will not pull down the other three. Oxford welcomes extra A-levels ‘if this would not compromise their performance in other key academic areas’.
The Extended Project (EPQ)
Schools treat the EPQ in very different ways. A few publish a lower alternative offer if you also get an A in the EPQ, sometimes only if you make them your firm choice; others do not count it towards an offer at all. Here is what six of the schools we checked say on their own admissions pages.
| School | What the school says |
|---|---|
| Hull York (HYMS) | An EPQ offer of AAB, with AA in Biology and Chemistry and B in the third subject, plus A in the EPQ. Only for applicants who make Hull York their firm choice, and not for applicants who are resitting. |
| Keele | A*AA, or AAA plus grade A in the EPQ. |
| Sheffield | An alternative offer of AAB, including Chemistry or Biology at grade A and a second science, plus A in the EPQ, with the EPQ and A-levels taken in the same sitting. Only if Sheffield is your firm choice. |
| Oxford | Not a condition of entry and not used in shortlisting, but you are encouraged to draw on it in your personal statement if the topic is relevant to medicine. |
| King's College London (KCL) | Not considered at any point of the assessment process. Its dentistry course says the same. |
| Lincoln Medical School | Not accepted as part of its 2027–28 A-level offer. |
Grades
What grades do medical and dental schools ask for?
An A-level offer is written as three grades, such as AAA or A*AA. If you apply before your results, the offer is conditional: you need to achieve those grades in your exams at the end of Year 13. AAA is the most common standard A-level offer: 27 of the 41 UK school-leaver medicine courses open to UK applicants ask for it, and 12 ask for A*AA, counting a school that gives a range at the top of it. The highest standard offer is Cambridge’s A*A*A; the lowest is Buckingham’s ABB.
| Offer | Courses | Schools |
|---|---|---|
| AAA | 27 | Aberdeen, Anglia Ruskin (ARU), Birmingham, Brighton & Sussex (BSMS), Bristol, Brunel Medical School, Cardiff, Dundee, Edge Hill, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Hull York (HYMS), Kent and Medway (KMMS), Lancaster, Leeds, Lincoln Medical School, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, North Wales (Bangor), Norwich (UEA), Nottingham, Sheffield, Southampton, St Andrews, Sunderland and University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) |
| A*AA | 12 | Aston University, Barts and The London (Queen Mary), Exeter, Imperial College London, Keele, King's College London (KCL), Leicester, Oxford, Peninsula (Plymouth), Queen's University Belfast (QUB), St George's and UCL |
| A*A*A | 1 | Cambridge |
| ABB | 1 | Buckingham |
Three schools give a range rather than a single offer: AAA–AAB at Kent and Medway (KMMS), A*AA–AAB at Peninsula (Plymouth) and A*AA–AAA at St George's. Kent and Medway sets the offer for students taking A-levels now from the average A-level attainment of their school. At Peninsula (Plymouth), the lower end of the range is the offer for widening access applicants.
Where the A* goes can matter. Imperial wants it in Biology or Chemistry (in a contextual offer it can be in any subject), Aston wants it in Biology or Chemistry, and Cambridge says its colleges usually require an A* in Chemistry. For a standard offer at Imperial or Aston, an A* in your third subject would not be enough.
For dentistry, 13 of the 16 dental schools ask for AAA and three ask for A*AA, counting Plymouth (A*AA–AAB) at the top of its range. At Plymouth, the lower end of the range is the offer for widening access applicants.
Predicted grades
Your teachers predict your grades for your UCAS application, and schools use those predictions in different ways. Hull York asks for a prediction of no lower than AAB. Aston says predicted A-level grades are not considered ‘at any stage of the admissions process’, and Lincoln builds its interview shortlist from your GCSEs, UCAT score and context rather than your A-levels, although its offers are still conditional on them. How schools use your GCSEs is covered in our GCSE requirements guide.
Contextual offers and resits
Can you get a lower offer, or resit?
If your school or circumstances qualify, you may get a lower contextual offer. Some examples from the schools’ current pages: Manchester’s contextual offer is AAB, and ABB for UK refugee or care-experienced applicants. Hull York’s reduced offer is AAB, and its alternative offer for applicants who complete one of its listed widening participation programmes is ABB; both are only for applicants who make Hull York their firm choice. Aston’s contextual offer is AAB, with AA in Chemistry and Biology. Lincoln’s is AAB and Newcastle’s is ABB. At Imperial, the A* in a contextual offer can be in any subject.
How each scheme decides who qualifies is covered in contextual offers for medicine and contextual offers for dentistry, with each medical school’s record side by side in our contextual offers table.
Resits
If you miss your offer, resitting is possible at some schools and not at others, and the rules differ a lot. Glasgow wants the required grades ‘at one sitting and at the first attempt’, and Kent and Medway does not accept A-level resits except through its extenuating circumstances policy. Newcastle accepts resits only from students who have applied to Newcastle before, and asks for one grade higher than the offer it would otherwise make. Hull York asks anyone repeating Year 13 to have achieved at least BBB at the first sitting. So it pays to treat your first sitting as the one that counts. Our A-level resit policy table lists the policy in each medical school’s record on this site. Resit rules change from year to year, so check the school’s own page for the year you apply; where the two differ, the school’s page is the one that counts.
Scotland and the IB
What about Scottish Highers or the IB?
Highers and Advanced Highers
If you are at school in Scotland, the same subject logic applies to your Highers, but requirements are set across two years. Glasgow, for example, asks for AAAAB at Higher in S5, including Chemistry, Biology and Physics or Mathematics, plus BB at Advanced Higher in S6, and does not count Highers taken in S4 towards the S5 requirement. Schools outside Scotland set their own versions: Hull York asks you to study Biology and Chemistry at Advanced Higher, with a standard offer of BBB at Advanced Higher plus AAAAB at Higher, or, if you take only two Advanced Highers, AA in Biology and Chemistry plus AAAAA at Higher. The Scottish Highers column in the medical school entry requirements table shows each school’s record.
The IB Diploma
36 points is the most common IB requirement in our medicine records, asked for by more than half of the 40 with an IB figure, and requirements run from 32 to 41–42 points. Schools also set Higher Level grades in named subjects: Cambridge asks for 41–42 points with 776 at Higher Level; Imperial for a minimum of 38 points with 6 in Higher Level Biology and Chemistry; King’s College London for 38 points overall or 19 from three Higher Levels, with 6 in Higher Level Biology and Chemistry. The same Chemistry-and-Biology logic applies to your Higher Level choices.
Choosing in Year 11
Choosing your A-levels: a Year 11 checklist
You choose your A-levels in Year 11, but you apply through UCAS in the autumn of Year 13, so there are two years between the choice and the application. If you are in Year 11 in 2026–27 and go straight from school, you will apply in autumn 2028 for entry in 2029. The rules on this page are the ones schools publish now, and yours may be different, which is one more reason to choose subjects that keep the most schools open. Parents: the checklist below is a good one to go through together.
Take Chemistry and Biology if you can.
Together they meet the science rule at 40 of the 41 medicine courses and all 16 dental schools. Chemistry is compulsory at 22 of those medicine courses and Biology at 15, so dropping either one shortens your list.
Thinking about Cambridge? Add Maths, Physics or Further Maths.
21 of the colleges Cambridge lists ask for Chemistry plus two other science or maths subjects.
Choose a third subject you will get top grades in.
At the schools quoted above it does not have to be a science. Avoid General Studies and Critical Thinking, and avoid pairs that overlap, such as Biology with Human Biology.
Do not take a fourth A-level just for your application.
Oxford and Manchester, for example, make offers on three A-levels. Take a fourth only if you want to study it and your other grades will not suffer.
Pass the practical endorsement.
In England, A-level Biology, Chemistry and Physics come with a separately reported practical endorsement: Pass or Not Classified. Oxford, Imperial, King’s College London, Manchester and Newcastle all expect or require a pass.
Keep dentistry in view.
If you might apply for dentistry, remember that 10 of the 16 dental schools make both Chemistry and Biology compulsory.
Check again before you apply.
Schools set their requirements for each year of entry, and they do change: Brighton and Sussex asked for both Biology and Chemistry for 2026 entry, but for 2027 entry asks for one of them. In Year 12, read each school’s own admissions page for your year; the tables below link to our guide for every school.
