US dental school requirements: GPA, DAT and acceptance rates for every DDS and DMD program

There is no national DAT or GPA cut-off for US dental schools, and 42 of the 78 programs in our catalog publish a class DAT average: 22 on the ADA's current 200–600 scale (published averages from 420 to 483.85) and 20 still on the retired 1–30 scale (from 19.0 to 24). Another 30 publish none, and 2 do not require the DAT. For 2027 entry, compare yourself with each school's figure on the scale it uses; the GPA, acceptance-rate and class-size figures in every row are not yet confirmed against the schools' own pages and are marked.

Dental programs: GPA, DAT and acceptance rate by school

Unconfirmed beside a figure marks one our records hold but we have not confirmed on the school’s own published pages; beside a program’s name it marks every figure in that row except the DAT, which was checked separately. Unconfirmed figures are shown exactly as stored, usually an earlier estimate, so the gap stays visible: check the school’s class profile before relying on one.

Entering-class GPA, the published class DAT average and its scale, acceptance rate, class size, in-state preference and interview format at 78 US dental programs (DDS and DMD). Alphabetical.

How to read this table

  • DAT (as published) quotes the class average each school publishes, exactly as written, with its scale and class. The DAT moved from a 1–30 scale to a 200–600 scale on March 1, 2025, and schools have not all switched, so the two are never mixed: retired-scale figures carry the ADA concordance band our record holds for them. “Headline average” marks a figure the school does not caption as the Academic Average.
  • Unconfirmed marks a figure we have not confirmed on the school’s own published pages. It is shown exactly as our record holds it, usually an earlier estimate, so you can see the gap; check the school’s class profile before relying on it.
  • GPA is the entering class’s overall GPA, with the science GPA beneath it. Acceptance rate is the share of applicants accepted as our record holds it, to one decimal place; we never compute one from applicant and class counts.
  • In-state preference is our catalog’s rating of how strongly a program favors its own state’s residents; the percentage beneath it is the share of the entering class from the state.
  • Not published means the program’s record in our catalog holds no figure for that cell. We leave the gap visible rather than estimate it; check the school’s own admissions page.
  • Last checked is the date a program’s DAT entry was checked against the school’s own page: the published figure, or that the school publishes none. The other figures in dental rows have not been confirmed yet, which is why they carry the marker. Schools republish class profiles every year, so the school’s own page is always the final word.

Frequently asked questions

What DAT score do you need for dental school?
There is no national cut-off, and schools report on two scales because the DAT moved from a 1–30 scale to a 200–600 scale on March 1, 2025. Of the 78 US dental programs in our catalog, 22 publish a class DAT average on the 200–600 scale, from 420 to 483.85, and 20 still publish one on the retired 1–30 scale, from 19.0 to 24. Compare yourself with each school's figure on the scale it uses rather than converting one scale into the other.
Which US dental schools do not require the DAT?
PNWU School of Dental Medicine and Workman School of Dental Medicine at High Point University do not require it, according to their records in our catalog. A further 30 programs publish no class DAT average.
Are the GPA and acceptance figures confirmed?
Not yet. None of the 78 dental programs' GPA, acceptance-rate or class-size figures in our records has been confirmed against the school's own class profile, so each one is marked unconfirmed. The DAT column is different: 71 of its 78 entries (the published average with its scale and class, or the fact that the school publishes none) were checked against the school's own page by Sep 12, 2026.
Do US dental schools prefer in-state applicants?
Our catalog rates 39 of the 78 programs as strongly favoring residents of their own state and 4 as moderately favoring them; 34 show no preference and 1 is rated out-of-state friendly.
What interview format do US dental schools use?
Of the 78 programs, 66 record a traditional interview only; 9 use multiple mini interview (MMI) stations, alone or alongside a traditional interview, and 4 use a panel.
